Altoona Curve News Release

(READING, PA) -- Four pitchers combined on a five-hitter Saturday as the Reading Phillies shutout the Altoona Curve, 3-0 at First Energy Stadium.

Eude Brito (5-6), the second of the four Phillies' hurlers, pitched five innings of middle relief. The left-hander allowed just one hit, walked three, and struck out five to get the win.

Altoona (72-46) lost for just the second time in its last 11 games. Despite the defeat, the Curve's magic number to reach the playoffs was reduced to 11 thanks to Bowie's loss at Harrisburg.

Reading (51-68) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Shane Bowers, coming back from a shoulder injury, started and pitched two scoreless frames before turning it over to Brito. Right-handers Felix Villegas and Martire Franco (eighth save) each pitched an inning in finishing off the shutout.

Offensively, Reading all three of their runs against Bobby Bradley (4-2). Carlos Ruiz smacked a lead-off home run in the fourth and Kurt Keene and Brito recorded RBI hits in the fifth.

Bradley didn't pitch badly in taking his first loss since May 8. The right-hander allowed five hits over six innings, walking one, and striking out two.

Nate McLouth collected a double and Tom Evans, Jorge Cortes, Ronny Paulino, and Scott Sheldon had singles to account for the Curve's five hits. Paulino extended his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 20.

Ray Sadler, out of the starting lineup for the last three games with a throat infection, popped out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth to end his 11-game hitting streak.

The rubber game of the series in Reading is Sunday at 1:05 p.m. In a duel of right-handers, the Curve goes with Matt Peterson (8-4, 3.27) against the Phillies' Carlos Chantres (0-1, 3.52).
