
Jones, Pope Lead Thunder To Victory

Trenton, NJ)- Mitch Jones had two hits and three RBI while Justin Pope allowed one run over six innings to lead the Trenton Thunder to a 7-5 win over New Britain on Saturday night. The game was played without delay, despite an impending storm from Hurricane Charley.
Trenton (55-64) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 3rd Inning off Rock Cats starter Francisco Liriano. CF Kevin Thompson lined a double that scored Jason Grove for a 1-0 lead. The second run came home on an infield hit by SS Andy Cannizaro. The lead went to 3-0 in the 4th Inning as Jake Weber, who replaced Thompson due to injury, doubled home Omar Fuentes. Liriano (0-2) allowed three runs on nine hits in four innings.
The Thunder claimed a 6-0 lead in the 6th Inning on a three-run double by Jones off Rock Cats reliever Erik Lohse. But New Britain (57-62) started their comeback with a solo homer from RF Kevin West in the 7th Inning. The Rock Cats added four runs in the 8th Inning, including a two-run double by PH Ryan Owens to close to within 6-5.
Trenton added an insurance run on a Craig Wilson RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. Thunder starter Justin Pope (4-2) earned the win allowing one run in six innings on five hits. He walked two and struck out four. David Shepard came on the get the final five outs to record his 18th save of the season.
Trenton will enjoy a rare Sunday "off-day" before beginning a series with Norwicvh on Monday. The series kicks off with a doubleheader at 6:05 PM.
