Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON - For one final time this regular season the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders come together for a USHL Eastern Conference matchup. Friday night kicked off the weekend series, and Raythan Robbins turned aside 36 shots in the Lumberjacks 4-2 win.
With the win Muskegon improves to 23-25-3-0 and keeps their playoff hopes alive. Cedar Rapids meanwhile falls to 25-19-4-4 and sees their lead over Muskegon in the standings drop to 9 points.
After a scoreless first period both teams found the back of the net in the second frame. Cedar Rapids struck first at the 3:38 mark. Logan Renkowski fired a shot on net that was turned aside by Robbins, but produced a rebound in front for Drew Stewart. The Notre Dame commit tapped the puck home for his first career USHL goal and a 1-0 RoughRiders lead.
The Jacks responded almost ten minutes later at 12:43. Ethan Whitcomb held possession on the near side of the offensive zone and pulled a toe drag around the defenseman before firing a shot above the glove of Bruno Bruveris. His 19th goal of the season tied the game back up at 1-1.
Only 1:13 later the RoughRiders banged home another rebound goal, though this time it was Ryan Walsh who was waiting in front of the crease. Walsh bounced off the Lumberjack in front of the net and found the puck back door with an open net to shoot at.
Trailing by one in the late stages of the period Muskegon regained the tie game to head into the intermission tied 2-2. Joe Connor carried the puck up the far side wall and dropped it off for Gavin McCarthy. The defenseman walked the puck down the wall and towards the slot then sent a pass back door to Jacob Terpstra who had no one around him. Bruveris was out of position so Terpstra had the entire net to shoot at for his third goal of the season with just 2:15 remaining in the second period.
The third period brought two more goals, both belonging to the Lumberjacks for a 4-2 win. First, at 11:04 the Jacks found themselves on a power play. George Fegaris carried the puck towards the slot and fired a shot that was stopped. Cody Croal found the rebound on the near side of the crease and rather than shooting, decided to slide it backdoor to Michael Callow who was there and ready to bang it home on the empty net.
Just after killing off a penalty and looking down the ice at an empty net Nate McBrayer tested his luck from his own zone. After blocking his teammates' attempt Justin Solovey carried the puck into the offensive zone and shot into the open net for the two goal, 4-2 lead.
Robbins (7-13-1) played all 60 minutes for Muskegon stopping 36 of 38 shots against. Bruveris (20-10-3-2) earns his 10th loss of the season allowing 4 goals on 24 Lumberjack shots.
The teams close out the weekend and season series tomorrow Saturday March 25th at 7 pm at Trinity Health Arena. For tickets visit muskegonlumberjacks.com or tune in with the official streaming partner of the USHL FloSports and the Mixlr app.
