Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Three Waterloo Black Hawks' goals were enough to earn a home win against the Des Moines Buccaneers Friday in a 3-2 decision at Young Arena.
The matchup concluded the eight-game season series between the teams. Waterloo won five times and earned 11 standings points to Des Moines' eight.
The teams exchanged goals within a two-minute span during the first period. Des Moines went ahead at 6:20, as the result of a Waterloo turnover near the Bucs blue line. A Lubomir Kupco breakaway was the result, and he flipped his shot over Emmett Croteau's left shoulder. The Hawks responded at 8:17. Ben Robertson circled the offensive zone; his shot from just above the right dot was blocked, but the puck came to Griffin Erdman, who slipped it in.
A second period power play conversion sent the Hawks into the lead at 8:02. Robertson's try from the high slot was altered, and the puck caromed Miko Matikka's way on left wing. Matikka was able to lift a quick backhander into the net before Jan Korec could slide from left to right.
The only multigoal lead of the night resulted from a redirection by Gavin O'Connell at 9:15 of the third. Aaron Pionk's blast from the edge of the left circle was tipped as O'Connell set a screen just outside the crease.
The teams exchanged power play opportunities in the late minutes with no change in score. However, two seconds after Waterloo's last advantage - and with 36 seconds left in the game - Braden Rourke got a piece of a shot on its way to the net, bringing the Buccaneers back within a goal after they had lifted Korec for an extra attacker.
The Bucs did not put another shot on net, and Croteau finished the night with 21 saves during the win. Waterloo outshot Des Moines 36-23.
The Hawks are on home ice again Saturday against another longtime rival: the Omaha Lancers. The 6:05 p.m. matchup is a U.S. Air Force College Night, with $10 tickets for all college students. It's also UNI Panther Pride Night, with a special appearance by Panther mascot TC. For seats, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
