Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
The Austin Ice Bats scored five power play goals in a 6-2 win over the Corpus Christi Rayz on Tuesday Night. Paul Depuydt ejected Rayz netminder, Jason Tapp for fight intervener, despite Tapp never fighting, throwing a punch or dropping his gloves, and gave Austin 13 power play opportunities against the league's least penalized team following a second period elbow on Rayz star Justin Quenneville from Austin forward Kurtis Kisio. The Ice Bats cashed in on six third period power plays on top of the ejection to the Rayz netminder in what was a one-goal game heading into the final frame. With the loss, the Rayz fell to 15-18-5 and had their lead over the Austin Ice Bats trimmed to just six points for second place in the Southeast Division and fifth in the Southern Conference. Corpus Christi returns to the American Bank Center on Friday Night at 7:05pm vs. the Laredo Bucks and Saturday Night at 8:05pm vs. the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Individual tickets are on sale now. Please call 814-PUCK for more information, or visit the Rayz online at www.ccrayz.com
An evenly played first period saw the Rayz and the Ice Bats each score on the power play 1:19 apart. Jay Latulippe got the Rayz on the board at 7:14 when he tipped a Niko Tuomi shot. Then Austin answered at 8:33 when Mike Bartlett redirected a shot off of Jason Tapp's glove and into the net. Both teams had nine shots on goal in the opening frame.
The bad blood between the Rayz and the Bats boiled over in the second period. With the game tied at 1-1, Ice Bats forward Kurtis Kisio elbowed Rayz forward Justin Quenneville, who remained down on the ice for several minutes. Several fights ensured leading to four ejections, including the Rayz Grant Clafton and Jason Tapp. Kevin Couture replaced Tapp in net for the Rayz. Kisio and Daniel Veenema were ejected for the Bats. The Rayz got a three minute major power play after all the penalties cancelled out at 11:22. On the power play, Geno Parrish scored the only goal of the frame at 13:49. The Bats outshot the Rayz 14-9 in the period.
The third period featured six power play opportunities for the Bats and they responded with four power play goals and a shorthanded tally to take control of the game and skate away with the victory.
Jason Tapp made 14 saves on 15 shots but did not figure into the decision. Couture, in relief, made 21 saves on 26 shots and fell to 0-4-1. Beaudry made 24 saves on 26 shots, improving to 9-13. The Rayz went 2-6 on the power play, and the Bats were 5-13. The Bats outshot the Rayz 41-26.
