Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Tim's Toyota Center saw the Southwest Division's first and third place teams face off in the Arizona Sundogs and New Mexico Scorpions Tuesday night. Coming into the game, the two clubs were separated by just four points. Arizona increased that lead to six and five over New Mexico and second-place Odessa respectively with a 9-4 win. The Sundogs exploded for five unanswered goals in the second en route to the win. Forward Tyler Redenbach collected five points (1g/4a) in the game.
Arizona skated out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period Tyler Redenbach collected a pass from defenseman Dan Laperriere and wristed the puck past Scorpions netminder Andrew Martin at the 2:07 mark. CHL scoring leader Alex Leavitt also tallied an assist on the play. The one-goal lead was short lived as New Mexico's Aaron MacInnis fired a slapshot from the point off Olivier Latendresse and over the glove of Arizona goaltender Bill Zaniboni 26 seconds later. Christopher Robertson assisted on the equalizer. With two-and-a-half minutes to play in the opening frame, Craig Macdonald gave his club a 2-1 lead pushing home a loose puck while on the powerplay. Zaniboni couldn't corral the initial shot taken by Vladimir Hartinger. Mitch Stephens also notched an assist on the go ahead tally.
The second period belonged solely to the Sundogs as they exploded for five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead into the third period. Jon Landry opened scoring for Arizona midway through the second with his club's first powerplay marker of the game as Redenbach fed a through pass to a streaking Landry who pushed the puck home to tie the game at two goals apiece. Leavitt collected his second helper of the game on the Landry tally. Two minutes later Leavitt grabbed his club's second goal with the man advantage on passes from David Schlemko and Redenbach to regain a one-goal lead. At 15:52 of the period, Olivier Latendresse snuck behind the New Mexico defense and lifted a puck over the shoulder of Martin for a 4-2 advantage. Chris Bartolone and Landry were credited with helpers on the Latendresse tally. Jason Visser tallied for Arizona 22 seconds later from Tyler Liebel and Redenbach for his club's fourth goal of the period and fifth overall in the game. With less than two minutes to play in the middle period, rookie forward Mark Kolanos found the back of the net on passes from Landry and Rob Lehtinen to give the Sundogs a commanding 6-2 lead heading into the third period.
New Mexico replaced Martin with backup goaltender Mike Minard to start the third period. The Scorpions converted on a five-on-three powerplay at 4:16 of the third on a Hartinger shot from the top of the circles to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Sundogs. Konrad Reeder and Dominic Osman assisted on the Scorpions second powerplay goal of the game. Dan Laperriere regained a four-goal lead for his club on their third powerplay marker of the contest as Liebel and Kolanos worked together to find the veteran defenseman open at the bottom of the circles. Laperriere collected his sixth of the season just as the man advantage was coming to an end. With 9:31 to play, Dusty Collins took a pass in the neutral zone from Redenbach and skated down the side boards before lifting a shot over the glove of Minard to give the Sundogs an 8-3 lead. New Mexico continued to fight, grabbing its fourth of the game with roughly seven minutes to play. Stephens grabbed his 13th of the year off a face off win from Osman to the left of Zaniboni. With less than two minutes to play in regulation, Collins notched his second of the game from Kolanos and Lehtinen to seal the 9-4 win.
Bill Zaniboni appeared in net for Arizona and made 31 saves on 35 shots for his ninth win this season while Andrew Martin started in net for New Mexico but was pulled in favor of backup Mike Minard after allowing six goals on 32 shots in the loss. Minard blocked 10 of 13 shots in the relief effort. The league's best powerplay in Arizona converted on three of seven chances while New Mexico finished 2-for-8 with the man advantage.
With the win, Arizona improves to 23-10-4 on the season and opens a five point cushion over second place Odessa in the Southwest Division.
