Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS - Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs goaltender Ken Carroll earned his 24th career shutout on Tuesday morning in Mississippi as the Mudbugs defeated the RiverKings by a final score of 4-0. Carroll turned away 49 shots to extend his league record for career shutouts as Bossier-Shreveport took over the first overall spot in the CHL standings, pending the result of Tuesday night's Rocky Mountain Rage game against Rio Grande Valley .

Elias Godoy had a goal and an assist in the game, which started at 10:00 am as a part of Mississippi 's field trip game for local school kids. The Mudbugs extended their streak to 17 consecutive games earning at least a point and also added to their Northeast Division lead, which now sits at 11 points over the RiverKings.

Despite the early start, both teams came out with energetic play in the first period, leading to some fast paced hockey and a few good chances. Both goaltenders were sharp in the first, with Carroll stopping 15 shots for the Mudbugs and Jeff Van Nynatten stopping 12 to keep the game scoreless at the end of one period.

Bossier-Shreveport continued to generate chances and made them count in the second period. The 'Bugs scored first as new Mississippi goaltender Jeff Van Nynatten stopped a Chris Brassard shot from neutral ice, only to see the rebound go past him off the stick of Brett Smith. Then Bossier-Shreveport continued their recent powerplay success as Godoy carried the puck down the ice into the offensive zone before feeding Joe Ori in front, who stuffed the puck in the make it 2-0. Godoy would then get into the act on his own after a long lead pass from Ryan Fairbarn that was tipped to him by Jason Campbell. Godoy got behind the RiverKings but had had to fight his way to the front with a defenseman hassling him from behind. Godoy controlled the puck long enough to poke it just inside the post for his tenth goal of the season to give the 'Bugs a 3-0 lead after two.

Ken Carroll's stellar play continued from the second into the third period, with the seventh-year Mudbugs goaltender stopping everything that came his way. Bossier-Shreveport got the icing on the win when Justin Aikins tipped in Kevin Cooper's wrist shot to extend the lead to 4-0. Carroll shut the door the rest of the way to win his 12th consecutive start with his third shutout this season. Eight of the 26 Mudbugs victories on the season have now come by way of shutout.

Bossier-Shreveport finished with one powerplay goal on three chances, while the RiverKings went 0 for 5. Mississippi outshot the Mudbugs 49-27 for the day. The 'Bugs now have a CHL-high 56 points on the season for the time being, prior to Tuesday night's game between the Rocky Mountain Rage (who have 55 points) and Rio Grande Valley. The Rage will have two games in hand over the Mudbugs after Tuesday night.

After Tuesday's game completed a stretch of four games in five days, the Mudbugs will have two days off before another set of three-in-three. Friday night, Bossier-Shreveport will travel to Okalahoma City to battle the Blazers at the Ford Center before returning home on Saturday and Sunday to take on Laredo and Rio Grande Valley . Tickets for those two games are available through Ticketmaster, and Friday night's game can be heard live on 1130 AM KWKH or seen live on the CHL Network.
