Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi, Texas: October 15, 2003 – The Corpus Christi Rayz are all set for the start of the sixth professional hockey season, as they made some last minute changes to their lineup on the final day of the preseason. The Rayz placed defenseman Joe Savioli and forward Daniel Schildorfer on waivers and traded defenseman, Mike Zeibaq to the Indianapolis Ice for right winger Etienne Morin, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President Pat Dunn announced today. The final preseason roster changes come just two days after the Rayz traded the rights to Russell Hogue to the Colorado Eagles for 6'6" defenseman Kevin Chabbert, and bring the Rayz player total to the league mandated 18 players. The Rayz will play the first regular season game of the season tomorrow night when they host the New Mexico Scorpions.

The final Rayz regular season roster holds two goalies, six defensemen and ten forwards. The newly acquired Morin is not one of these 18. The Rayz obtained the 24 year old's rights, but have not yet signed him to a deal for this upcoming season. Last year in Indianapolis, Morin scored 25 goals and 40 points in his rookie campaign and finished second in the voting for CHL Rookie of the Year honors. The 6'0", 175 lb. Forward from Levis, PQ spent four years playing for Colgate University. He captained his team in his senior year of 2001-02. At the end of last season he spent four games in the ECHL for the Greenville Grrrowl.

Zeibaq is on his way to Indianapolis where he will join the team soon after the season begins. Savioli and Schildorfer were waived and other CHL teams will have the option of signing them off the waiver wire. If no team does sign them, they will become free agents. With their final 18 players the Rayz will kick off the 2003-04 CHL season tomorrow night in the first and only CHL game scheduled for Thursday night. In a matchup of teams whose history has crossed paths a number of times, the Rayz and the Scorpions will face off for the second time in six days. The Scorpions defeated the Rayz in the championship game of the Caller Times Best of the Best Preseason Showcase on Saturday night. Aside from their recent contest, both teams have much in common. The Rayz and Scorpions are both owned and operated by WD Sports. Last season the Scorpions edged out the final playoff spot over the Rayz by a mere two points with a win on the last day of the season. Tomorrow night, the Rayz will look to exact revenge from last season's playoff race.

Earlier in the day, the Corpus Christi Rayz also announced a partnership that had been formed with CHRISTUS Spohn Health System that will provide the Rayz with excellent medical treatment throughout the 2003-04 season and for years to come.

The Corpus Christi Rayz drop the puck on the 2003-04 Central Hockey League season tomorrow night when they host the New Mexico Scorpions at the Memorial Coliseum. Faceoff is at 7:05 and the doors open at 6:00 for pregame festivities. Season tickets, and individual game group packages are currently available. Please call (361) 814-PUCK for more information.
