New Mexico Scorpions News Release
ALBUQUERQUE - The Central Hockey League opens its 12th season on Thursday night, and the New Mexico Scorpions are a part of it. The Scorpions open their eighth campaign of pro hockey when they take on the Corpus Christi Rayz in a game at Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi, Texas. Faceoff is 6:05 p.m. MDT. The game will be broadcast on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal (KNML-AM) unless there is a Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, in which case the game would move to 1050 KTBL-AM.
The Scorpions won both preseason games on the Coastal Bend, including a 4-3 win over the Rayz last Saturday night. New Mexico got solid contribution from the power play during the exhibition contests, scoring five goals in two games with the man advantage. The teams met just once during the regular season in 2002-03, with the Rayz claiming a 4-1 win at Tingley Coliseum on Jan. 15. In fact, the home team has won only three times in 11 career meetings, and the road club has taken the last six dating back to a 5-2 Scorpions win at Tingley Coliseum on Jan. 7, 2000.
Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald also announced his team's opening night roster. The Scorpions did not release any players, placing winger Peter Ambroziak and Brock Johnson on the Negotiation List and moving defenseman Shaun Peet to the Suspended List. McDonald added that while Ambroziak and Peet won't start the season on the active roster, they are still integral parts of the team.
"Peter missed a couple days of training camp to tend to a matter back in Albuquerque," said McDonald, "and we both agreed that this will give him a couple extra days to get into shape as well as give me a chance to better evaluate our young players. Shaun Peet won't be with the team until mid-November due to his NASCAR duties, so this move gives us some additional flexibility."
The Scorpions continue their season-opening five-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they visit the Austin Ice Bats in a rematch of last year's Southern Conference Semifinals playoff series. Faceoff is 6:30 p.m. MDT.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on 1050 KTBL-AM. The Scorpions return to Albuquerque for the home opener on Friday, October 31 at Tingley Coliseum against the expansion Colorado Eagles. Faceoff is 7:35 p.m. The Scorpions Halloween Party will feature Scorpions Halloween masks given to the first 1,500 fans, special jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game, an on-ice costume contest and plenty of fun for the entire family.
Season tickets for the 2003-2004 season start as low as $320. Ten-game packages are now available as well, and include a FREE ticket to the 2004 Dodge CHL All-Star Game. For more information, call the Scorpions office at (505) 881-PUCK (7825).
