Rays Hold off Rally, D-Braves Fall 5-4

August 4, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - Danville entered the seventh inning down 5-0, and with just two hits as they attempted their rally. Danville managed four runs on three hits in the final two frames, but it would not be enough as catcher Nick Ciuffo alongside closer Ruben Paredes shut the book on the Braves ending the game on a strike ""˜em out throw "˜em out".

Tanner Murphy pinch hit in the ninth for DH Mike Dodig to start off the inning with the D-Braves down 5-4. Murphy would single on a line drive to right, and Fernelys Sanchez stepped in on first to pinch run for the catcher bringing up Bryan De La Rosa. De La Rosa is currently hitting below the Mendoza line, or under a .200 batting average on the season. In a sacrifice attempt, three foul bunt attempts led to his strikeout, bringing up Omar Obregon as the game winning run. Obregon struck out for just the eighth time all season, and Nick Ciuffo showed off his cannon of an arm on the play throwing out the fleet of foot Sanchez to end the game on an attempted steal of second base.

Andry Ubiera had a second straight outing which he would like to forget. The right hander threw 5.0 innings, giving up four hits and five runs, four earned. Ubiera walked one, and struck out three. Ubiera gave up two homers on the night, a two run shot to Nick Ciuffo in the second, and a three run shot to Angel Moreno in the third which amounted to all of Princeton's runs.

Mike Dodig got Danville's offense going in the seventh, as he grounded out allowing Jordan Edgerton to score. De La Rosa stepped up to the plate next, hitting a slow roller to short that Riley Unroe let slip between his legs. Left fielder Manny Sanchez threw home, but an off target toss allowed Alejandro Piloto to score making it 5-2 Rays in the seventh.

Jordan Edgerton came to the plate in the eighth with two runners on, and looking to get out of his current slump at the dish. Edgerton singled to left, knocking in Justin Black for Edgerton's 32nd RBI of the year, second in the Appalachian League. Matt Tellor would step to the plate next, but instead it was Steve Ascher who threw a wild pitch and Ozzy Albies was able to avoid a tag at home on a close play, making it 5-4 Princeton which would hold as the final score.

Tomorrow's action resumes at 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 325 Field in Dan Daniel Memorial Park, as Danville's (26-17) Daniel Cordero (3-3, 5.72 ERA) and Princeton's (23-20) Trevor Lubking (1-3, 3.16 ERA) are set to face off in the series deciding rubber match.
