Mariners Take Second Game from Kingsport 6-4

August 4, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release

The Pulaski Mariners (25-19) rode the hot bats of the middle of their batting order to a 6-4 victory over the Kingsport Mets (20-24).

Pat Peterson (0-1, 4.22 ERA) started for the eighth time, but ran into trouble in the second inning. The Mets sent five batters to the plate before Pulaski could record an out. Zach Mathieu cleared the bases with a two-RBI double and would later score himself. Matters could have gotten worse had it not been for a 6-4-3 double play by Jose Figuera which killed the scoring rally and limited the damage to three runs.

That would be Peterson's final inning of work. His final tally showed three runs on five hits through two innings.

Pulaski responded quickly and would take hold of the lead after the third inning. Daniel Torres led off the second inning with a single into center field. He would touch home on a double by Jose Leal.

The Mariners struck for four in the subsequent inning. Torres drove home both Jay Baum and Carlton Tanabe with a drive into center field. Yordi Calderon and Chase Nyman also contributed with RBI singles.

It was the heart of the order that drove Pulaski's offense on Monday. Hitters three through six went a combined 10-for-18 with one RBI and five runs scored.

"Everyone is very relaxed at the plate" said Torres. "They're trusting their swings and the work they've put in during batting practice. We're all seeing the ball really well right now."

Spencer Hermann (1-0, 0.00) stepped into the long reliever role vacated by the departed Ricardo Pereira-the newest Clinton LumberKing. Hermann pitched three-and-two-thirds innings of one hit ball, walked four batters, and struck out six to earn his first victory as a Pulaski Mariner.

Kingsport scratched out one run against Peter Miller (2-1, 1.71 ERA) in the eighth inning, but Miller was able to regain his composure and limit the damage. He worked around a two-out single in the ninth inning to record his fourth save of the Appalachian League campaign.

Now holders of the series, the Mariners set their sights on a sweep of the Kingsport Mets tomorrow night at 7pm. That game will take place on College Night-any patron with a valid student ID will receive a two dollar discount on all tickets. Fans wearing the apparel of their favorite college or university can enter Calfee Park on a one dollar discount.
