Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that defensive back Keon Raymond is this year's recipient of the prestigious Presidents' Ring. Raymond becomes the first defensive player to win the award since defensive end Joe Fleming was awarded the ring in 2003.
"It's an absolute honour to be named this year's Presidents' Ring recipient," said Raymond. "I had a chance to look at the list of past winners and I'm humbled to be on a list with Stamps greats like Henry Burris, Alondra Johnson, Dave Dickenson and Rocco Romano."
The Presidents' Ring has been presented annually since 1967 to the Stampeders player who best demonstrates excellence on and off the field. Raymond's teammates selected him as the winner based on his in-game contributions, leadership, inspiration and motivational skills. Raymond will formally receive his ring at Fanfest on May 26.
Raymond, with 237 interception-return yards, helped the Stampeders defence lead the CFL in that category with 423. His most memorable play came against the Saskatchewan Roughriders when Raymond returned an interception 117 yards for a touchdown, setting a new club record for longest interception return. Raymond finished with five picks and two touchdowns and was named a CFL West Division All-Star.
Raymond is also well known for his tireless work in the Calgary community. He is the Stampeders' representative for Canadian Blood Services, one of the many community partners with which the Stamps are affiliated. He often speaks at schools, churches and community centres. Raymond was also Calgary's nominee for the 2011 Tom Pate Award which recognizes outstanding sportsmanship and contributions to team, community and the CFL Players' Association.
"I can't think of a more deserving player for this award," said Lyle Bauer, president and COO of the Stampeders. "Stamps fans have seen Keon's talents on the field but it's great to also recognize his work off the field. We are lucky to have an athlete like Keon Raymond in Calgary."
Note: Lyle Bauer and Keon Raymond will be available for interviews on Friday at 11 a.m. in the players' lounge. Media can access the lounge via the Clubhouse entrance.
