Arizona Rattlers News Release
PHOENIX - The two-time ArenaBowl champion Arizona Rattlers started their training camp with a mix of familiar and unfamiliar faces as the first three days were filled with intensity and excitement.
After two practices on Friday, the Rattlers met again for a third practice on Saturday morning which was followed by an inter-squad scrimmage. The team took the day off Sunday and resumed practice this afternoon.
"We really had the guys go at it hard the first couple of days," said Rattler head coach Gene Nudo. "With training camp only being a couple of weeks, we want to make sure that we get right down to business and do everything in our power to make sure we are ready to go on January 29."
Here is a brief breakdown of what took place in the camp's first three days.
QUARTERBACK
In addition to Sherdrick Bonner, the Rattlers camp features another returning quarterback in Travis Cole. Cole, who was on the Rattlers practice squad the past two seasons, has looked sharp. Newcomer Dennis Gile, who signed a free agent contract today, looks to compete for the backup role.
WIDE RECIEVERS
Offseason acquisition Damien Groce, who's coming off standout season with the Columbus Destroyers, seems to be making a smooth transition to the desert as he pulled down some tough grabs throughout. Former af2standout and Philadelphia Eagle Jeremiah Pope caught the eye of coaches and fans early as he seems like he could be a true offensive threat.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Veteran defensive specialist Wendell Davis, who played with San Jose last season, has played hard along with veteran Clarence Lawson.
LINEBACKERS
Asi Faoa, an af2 free agent pickup, had a remarkable first couple of days on both sides of the ball while veteran Bo Kelly looks ready for his tenth season in the league.
LINEMAN
Returnees, Vince Amey, Wendall Gaines, Anthony Hutch and Mark Tucker were joined by newcomers such as Trevor Misipeka, who is trying to earn a roster spot in his first AFL camp.
