Brigade WIns First-Ever Scrimmage 30-28
January 9, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Kansas City Brigade News Release
Anxious to see their first real action of the preseason, the Brigade certainly did not play against the Grand Rapids Rampage on Monday afternoon at Kemper Arena like it was a scrimmage. All three Brigade quarterbacks threw touchdown passes and the defense scored nine points of its own on the way to a 30-28 win.
"We saw some positive things and we saw some things that we need to work on," Coach Kevin Porter said. "Overall I would say that the day was a success, but now we will evaluate the film and get back at it on the practice field. We have very high standards for our team, so we are never completely satisfied, but I thought our key players were consistent and some of the new guys stepped up at times to make some plays. We still have a lot of (training) camp left."
Andy Kelly was under center for the Brigade's first series and wasted no time making the big plays he has been known for his entire career. On the scoring play he scrambled out of the pocket to avoid the rush and found Jerel Myers behind the defense over the middle for a 45-yard touchdown.
Chris Sanders took the snaps on the next series and made some great passes under pressure. After guiding the offense into the red zone he found Lamont Moore on a quick touchdown strike. The defense showed its pass rush ability on the Rampage's next series as linebacker Chris Morant blitzed and knocked down passes at the line on two consecutive plays.
Steve Bellisari was the third Brigade quarterback on the field and refused to be left out of the scoring. He easily hit a wide open John Booth on a post pattern for a 45-yard touchdown. After that the Brigade defense took control. Down by a touchdown lineman Jon McCall started the rally by quickly rushing into the backfield and sacking the quarterback in the end zone for a safety. On the Rampage's very next series linebacker Brian Poli-Dixon jumped on a fumbled snap in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.
Kicker Tim Seder connected on six of seven field goal attempts as the special teams unit worked out to end the scrimmage. The format attempted to simulate actual game settings as much as possible by using a play clock and having league officials monitor the action. Each offense had two consecutive possessions starting at their own five yard line and turnovers did not result in a change of possession.
NOTE: Practice has been changed for tomorrow (Tuesday, January 10). The team will arrive at Kemper at 11am and solely work on conditioning. They should be here until 12:15pm. If you would like to conduct an interview, please contact Rob Thomson (913-226-6024) to set it up.
