Albany River Rats News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY - River Rats points leader Jerome Samson buried an over-time winner, 2:21 into the extra session as Albany took the first game of the 2009-10 Time Warner Cable Cup Series 2-1 over the Adirondack Phantoms Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Albany looked to be on their way to a 1-0 decision late in the third period, but Adirondack's Krys Kolanos knotted the game with 2:25 to play to force overtime. Midway through the extra session River Rats assistant captain Bryan Rodney controlled the puck inside the blue-line and skated across the top of the faceoff circles before sending a sharp pass across the slot for a Samson one-timer.
The win was Albany's fourth straight as they improved to 4-1-0-0 on the year. The River Rats penalty kill remained perfect, denying five opportunities tonight to make it 20-for-20 on the year.
Nick Dodge scored the game's first goal late in the opening period. Matthew Pistilli split a pair of defenders to gain the blue-line, but had the puck knocked off of his stick in the low slot; Dodge collected the loose puck and unloaded a wrist shot into the back of the net at 18:20.
The River Rats were out-shot 13-4 in the second period and Adirondack had three power plays in the frame, but Albany's Justin Peters remained perfect in net to maintain his team's one goal lead through 40 minutes of action. The Phantoms' best chance in the middle stanza came on a goal-mouth flurry in the final two minutes, which saw Peters shut the door on three consecutive close-range shots.
River Rats goaltender Justin Peters stopped 30-of-31 shots faced to earn his third win of the season. Phantoms goalie Johan Backlund allowed two goals on 28 shots and took the loss as Adirondack fell to 2-3-0-0 on the season. The Phantoms out-shot Albany 31-28. Both sides went 0-for-5 on the power play. Albany heads to Worcester tomorrow for a 3:05 p.m. faceoff against the Sharks. The River Rats next home game is Friday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. against the Rochester Americans.
