COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Tuesday, January 18, 2011) - The Colorado Rapids selected forward Philip Bannister in the second round (36th overall) and defender Javed Mohammed in the third round (54th overall) in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft held today.
The 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft consisted of three rounds of 18 picks and followed the same draft order as last week's MLS SuperDraft. As MLS Cup Champions, the Rapids held the last pick in each round, but Colorado had previously traded their first round selection of today's draft to FC Dallas on July 30, 2010 in exchange for Anthony Wallace.
Bannister, born in England, scored 40 goals and registered 29 assists in 69 games during his collegiate career at Loyola University (Maryland). He earned All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors all four years playing for the Greyhounds and finished with a share of the school's all-time assist record. Bannister led all NCAA Division I men's soccer players in points per game last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Mohammed earned Second Team ALL-BIG EAST honors his junior and senior years finishing his career at the University of South Florida scoring one goal and adding 18 assists in 80 games. Born in Trinidad, he has played for the U-17 and U-20 Trinidad & Tobago National Teams.
Bannister and Mohammed are expected to join Colorado's SuperDraft picks Eddie Ababio and Colin Givens, along with the rest of the team, for the start of preseason training later this month.
The 2010 MLS Cup champion Rapids open their 16th MLS season in 2011 hosting the expansion Portland Timbers at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, March 19 at 7 p.m. MT. Season tickets are available by calling (303) 825-GOAL or online at ColoradoRapids.com.
