HOUSTON, TX (Tuesday, January 18, 2011) -- The Houston Dynamo selected goalkeeper Evan Newton and midfielder Sergio Castillo in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft this afternoon. Both players are expected to be invited to the Dynamo's pre-season training camp in hopes of earning a roster spot.

Newton was selected with the seventh pick in the first round of Tuesday's draft. He was named first team all-Colonial Athletic Association in 2010 as a senior at Old Dominion University, where he finished as the school's all-time leader in saves and shutouts. A former member of the U.S. U-17 national team, Newton will turn 23 in April.

Castillo, selected in the second round with the 25th overall pick, was named second team all-Missouri Valley Conference at Creighton University in 2010 as a defensive midfielder. He split his four years at Creighton between defense and midfield. Born in Guerrero, Mexico, Castillo was raised in Escondido, Calif.

The Dynamo passed in the draft's third and final round. Houston had selected Generation adidas players Kofi Sarkodie and Will Bruin in the first round of last Thursday's MLS SuperDraft.

The Dynamo are set to open preseason training on Monday, January 24, with their MLS regular season opener set for Saturday, March 19, against the Philadelphia Union at Robertson Stadium. Tickets are available at HoustonDynamo.com.
