CARSON, CA - The Colorado Rapids dropped a 4-1 decision against Chivas USA tonight in a game played at The Home Depot Center. The loss left Colorado in third place of the Western Conference, three points ahead of Real Salt Lake.
The first goal of the night came in the 5th minute, when defender Mike Petke sent the ball into his own net. The play began on the left side of the field where midfielder Jonathan Bornstein sent a low cross into the heart of the Rapids penalty area. Petke, in an effort to cut the dangerous cross slid into the path of the ball, but the clearance beat goalkeeper Bouna Condoul to his upper right corner.
The Rapids came close to scoring their first goal of the night in the 12th minute, when Eric Denton combined with Dedi Ben-Dayan. Denton joined the Colorado attack in a quick breakaway. His pass to Ben-Dayan inside of the penalty area was redirected by the Israeli midfielder with a masterful back heel that left Denton alone against the goalkeeper. His shot went just inches wide of Chivas' goal.
The second goal of the game for Chivas USA came in the 24th minute, when Ante Razov beat Coundoul on a one-on-one situation. The play began at midfield, when Francisco Palencia sent a through pass into the open leaving Razov alone against the Rapids goalkeeper. The Chivas forward beat Condoul to his left post.
Ben-Dayan netted his second goal of the season in the 31th minute after combining with Jacob Peterson inside of the home team's penalty area. The Israeli international played a give-and-go with Peterson that left him alone seven yards away from goal. Ben-Dayan beat goalkeeper Preston Burpo to his far post with a powerful low shot to set the score 2-1.
The home team increased their lead in the 76th minute, when Francisco Mendoza beat Coundoul from close range. The play began on the left side of Chivas' attack where Razov sent a through pass that left Palencia in a one-on-one run against Coundoul. The Mexican international took a touch on the ball to go around the goalkeeper and left it in front of the onrushing Mendoza who pushed it into the open net for the 3-1 lead.
Chivas added yet another goal in the 85th minute, when Palencia scored his first of the night. The Mexican forward received a through pass from Mendoza inside of the Rapids penalty area and beat Coundoul with a well positioned shot to the lower left corner for the 4-1.
