Sporting Kansas City News Release

Kansas City, MO. (Saturday, June 3, 2006) - The losing streak was snapped, but the Kansas City Wizards were still left with a sour taste in their mouths as they tied the New York Red Bulls 1-1 in front of over 11,000 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Wizards outshot the Red Bulls 17-8, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, in improving to 4-4-2 on the season, retaining second place in the Eastern Conference.

New York struck first in the 30th minute on Chris Henderson's first goal of the season. Mark Lisi stood over a Red Bulls' free kick from just beyond the top right corner of the Wizards' penalty box hit a looping cross onto the back post. Steve Jolley got underneath the cross and headed it back across the frame and into the path of Henderson running onto the near post. Henderson let the ball fall to the crowd and struck towards the top right corner. Kansas City goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi got in front of the ball, batting it away as he fell across the line, but there was no question as to whether or not the ball crossed the line because Oshoniyi's foot caught the ball out of mid air as was tumbling into the back of the net.

Kansas City equalized in the second half on Jose Luis Burciaga Jr.'s penalty kick in the 58th minute that left Red Bulls' goalkeeper Tony Meola baffled. The Wizards were awarded the PK after Scott Sealy was clipped from behind by New York defender Jeff Parke as he ran through the box attempting to catch up to a cross that was sent in from the right side.

The Wizards are now tied with Columbus, who beat FC Dallas tonight, for second place in the East. Kansas City travels to Ohio next weekend to face the Crew on Saturday, June 10th at 6:30 p.m. CT at Crew Stadium.
