Kitchener Rangers News Release
Two goals from Chris Marchese led the Windsor Spitfires to a 4-2 victory over the Kitchener Rangers on Thursday night. Brent Pedersen and Tobias Rieder each scored their first goals of the season for the Rangers in the loss.
The Spitfires jumped to an early lead, opening the scoring less than two minutes into the first period. Chris Marchese picked up the puck near the Rangers blueline and snapped a forehand shot past starter Frank Palazzese. Brady Vail and Ben Johnson were credited with assists on the play.
A power play goal from Rangers forward Brent Pedersen evened the score at 1-1. The sophomore winger tipped Max Iafrate's point shot inside the right goal post to record his first of the season. Evan McEneny also assisted on the goal at 13:21.
Windsor out-shot Kitchener 7-3 in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Overager Derek Schoenmaker re-established Windsor's lead five minutes into the middle frame. The Spitfires controlled the puck off a face-off deep in Rangers' territory and threw the puck at the crease. Palazzese made the initial save, but Schoenmaker gained control of the rebound and lifted a high shot into the net. The Kitchener-native's first as a Spitfire was assisted by Emerson Clark and Jordan Maletta.
The Rangers led shots on goal 18-17 in the second period.
Kitchener's second power play marker of the game knotted the score at 2-2 in the third. Radek Faksa intercepted a Windsor clearing attempt and shoveled a pass to Tobias Rieder, posted to left of Pavelka. The goal was the German import's first of the 2012-13 season.
Marchese would add his second of the evening in the final minute, jumping on Vail's centering pass and pitching it into the top corner of the net. His second of season was the game winner, coming with just 44 seconds remaining in the contest.
Michael Clarke added an empty net goal to seal a 4-2 Spitfires victory. Windsor out-shot the Rangers 13-10 in the final frame, finishing the game with a 38-31 overall advantage. Palazzese made 33 saves in his first start of the season.
