
Randy Knorr To Lead Senators In 2010

Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Senators and Washington Nationals announced today that Randy Knorr is the new manager of the Senators. Knorr replaces John Stearns who had been the Sens manager the past two seasons. He becomes the 15th different manager for the Sens since 1987. He leads a staff familiar to Sens fans as Troy Gingrich, Randy Tomlin, and Atsushi Toriida all return for 2010.
Knorr, a former catcher, was the Toronto Blue Jays 10th round selection in the 1986 draft. He spent parts of 11 seasons in the big leagues after making his major league debut on September 5, 1991 with the Blue Jays. He played with five different big league teams (Toronto, Houston, Florida, Texas, and Montreal) hitting .226 in 676 at bats with 24 HR and 88 RBI. He earned World Series rings with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992 and 1993. He appeared in game five 1993 World Series.
This is his fifth season as a manager in the Nationals organization. He previously managed three consecutive seasons for Potomac (2006-2008). His first managerial experience was in 2005 with Savannah. He is 241-241 as a minor league manager including guiding the Potomac Nationals to the Carolina League Championship in 2008. He spent last season on the Nationals major league staff as the bullpen coach. Randy and his wife Kimberly reside in Tampa, FL during the off-season.
Gingrich returns to the Senators as the hitting coach for a third consecutive season. Gingrich played with the Senators for parts of the 2001, 2002, and 2003 seasons appearing in 34 total games. He retired as a player during spring training 2004. Since retiring, Gingrich has spent the past five seasons as a coach in the Nationals organization. He was Vermont's hitting coach in 2004 and Potomac's for three seasons, 2005-2007. During the off-season Gingrich resides in San Diego with his wife Lauren and two children.
Tomlin returns for a second consecutive season as the Senators pitching coach. The popular Tomlin spent parts of the 1989 and 1990 seasons pitching for the Senators before being promoted to Buffalo and then onto Pittsburgh. He was 11-8 in 24 appearances with Harrisburg. He also spent parts of five seasons pitching in the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates going 30-31 in his career. His best season came for the 1992 Eastern Division Champion Pirates when he went 14-9 during the regular season with a 3.44 ERA. Prior to being in Nationals organization the past three seasons, Tomlin was the pitching coach for Liberty University for nine years. Randy and his wife Janet have three children and make their home in Lynchburg, VA.
Toriida returns for a second season with the Harrisburg Senators and his eighth season overall in the Nationals organization. Toriida spent 2008 as the head athletic trainer for Potomac, and served in the same capacity with Hagerstown in 2007 and Savannah in 2006. From 2003-2005, Toriida enjoyed three years as the head athletic trainer for Vermont of the NY-Penn League. After receiving his graduate degree from Plymouth State College, Toriida began his career in baseball in 2002 as the assistant trainer for the Rockford River Hawks of the Independent Frontier League. Atsushi and his wife Nana have one child and reside in Japan during the off-season.
Metro Bank Park is currently undergoing renovations as part of phase II of a two-phase project announced last December by the City of Harrisburg and the Harrisburg Senators. The 2010 season opens on the road in Altoona (Pirates) on Thursday, April 8th with the home opener set for Thursday, April 15th at 7:00pm against the New Britain Rock Cats (Twins). For the first time since 1988, the Senators are hosting the Eastern League All-Star game. All the stars are coming out on July 14th at newly renovated Metro Bank Park.
