Ramon Leads Goldeyes to Game 1 Win
September 5, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The underdogs have struck first thanks to Amos Ramon's bat and some great pitching.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes overcame an early 2-0 deficit to beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-2 Wednesday night before 2,178 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.
The win gives Winnipeg a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five American Association Divisional Series.
Fargo got on the board quickly. Zach Penprase and Buddy Sosnoskie singled in the bottom of the first inning and then scored on a double by Nic Jackson, but that was it for runs from the home side.
Winnipeg replied in the top of the third inning by playing a little small ball. Kyle Day was hit by a pitch, went to third on a Ramon double and scored on a Price Kendall ground out, which cut the RedHawks lead to 2-1.
After doubles in each of his first two plate appearances, Ramon smoked an offering from Fargo starter Tyler Herron over the 408 feet sign on the centre field wall. The two-run home run gave the Goldeyes a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, an error by Kyle Day in left field put runners on second and third for Fargo and the RedHawks were poised to tie the game. However, Day caught a fly out from Buddy Sosnoskie a batter later and threw out Todd Jennings at home plate to end the inning.
Winnipeg extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the ninth inning. With Mike Coles on second and Luis Alen on third, Ramon sent a single to right field that scored Alen. However, Coles was tagged out at home plate when he also tried to score on the play.
Goldeyes starter Ace Walker settled down after giving up for the two runs in the first inning and picked up the win. He went six innings before being relieved by Brian Beuning, who shutout Fargo in the last three innings for the save.
Herron suffered the loss for the RedHawks after giving up three runs on seven hits during eight innings of work.
Game 2 of the series goes Thursday night in Fargo. Winnipeg will start lefty Chris Salamida, while Fargo will go with Alex Caldera.
The pre-game show on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds begins at 6:30 p.m. First pitch is scheduled for 7:02 p.m.
