Ralph nets a pair of markers in Rockford's 4-1 win

Muskegon, Mich.- It took the Rockford IceHogs seven seasons to wrap up its first ever division title. The Hogs topped the Muskegon Fury 4-1 at the L.C. Walker Arena behind 31 saves from goalie Ronnie Vogel and a pair of goals from winger Jason Ralph to clinch the United Hockey League's Western Division and assure themselves of home-ice advantage in the first round of the Colonial Cup Playoffs..

In the opening period, the team captain Ralph netted a pair of goals midway through to put Rockford up 2-0. His first came six seconds after a power play expired, slapping in a centering feed from rookie center Yannick Tifu at 11:35. Ralph added his second of the period and 13th of the season when he slid one past Muskegon goalie Clayton Pool at 14:20. Rookie defenseman Ryan Carrigan later extended the lead to 3-0 when he knocked in his own rebound past Pool for a 3-0 advantage at 15:34.

In the third period, Muskegon cut the Rockford lead down to 3-1 when David Wrigley knocked in a perfect cross-ice pass from Ryan Keller at 2:36. The Hogs got the goal back with a power-play marker of its own when winger Greg Barber blasted in his 24th of the campaign and extending Rockford's lead to 4-1.

The game ended with fireworks as the teams engaged in a scrum that resulted in 122 minutes of penalty time at the 19:00 mark of the third period. There was a total of eight fighting majors eight game minute misconducts handed out to the IceHogs Robin Big Snake, Matt Gens, Preston Mizzi and Ralph and Muskegon's Ken Fels, Jason Lawmaster, Dave Van Drunen and Wrigley. Lawmaster was also assessed a tripping minor.

Rockford finished the contest 1-for-6 on the power play while holding Muskegon to 1-for-7. Pool was saddled with the loss, making 24 saves.
