St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN – For a while Friday night, it appeared as if history was really going to repeat itself. This time, however, the rally fell short.

Chris Weekly's two home runs and five RBIs were too much as Schaumburg held off St. Paul, 6-4, in the Northern League opener for both teams before a standing room only crowd of 6,647 at Midway Stadium.

Weekly hit both his homers off Bryan Gaal (0-1), who lasted six innings and took the loss for St. Paul. Matt Bailie (1-0) went a strong seven innings and left with a 6-1 lead to get the win. He had to sweat it out, however, as the Saints scored three in the eighth and brought the winning run to the plate in the last of the ninth before bowing out.

After both teams were held hitless through three innings, the Flyers took advantage of Justin Hall's throwing error and Weekly's drive inside the right field foul pole for a 3-0 lead in the fourth. The Saints got an unearned run in the fifth but Weekly offset that with a mammoth three run poke in the sixth.

In the eighth, St. Paul roughed up reliever E.J. Shanks as back-to-back-to-back hits by Kris Cox, Hall and Olow made things interesting at 6-4.

In the ninth, Blake Cross retired the first two batters he faced. He then hit Tim Marks with a pitch and walked Chris Weber. But he induced Cox to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.

In addition to Weekly, Eric Cole had two hits and scored twice for the Flyers. Cox and Billy Munoz had two hits each for the Saints. Weber, who signed with the team after being spotted a tryout camp in early May, had a solid debut with a single, a hit by pitch and a walk.

Game 2 of the series is set for Saturday with Schaumburg lefty Anthony Boughner (7-1 last year) facing St. Paul righthander Mike Meyer (8-7) at 7:05 p.m.
