Joliet, Ill.—Josh Loggins' run-scoring single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 and lifted the Joliet JackHammers to a 3-2 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the Northern League season opener for both clubs.

The JackHammers got the scoring started in the second inning with two runs off RailCats' starting pitcher Greg Bruso. Jayson Drobiak led off the inning with a single to right and went to second on an infield single by Jim Kavourias. Matt McCay followed with a single to right that scored Drobiak and moved Kavourias to third. Gabby Delgado grounded out to second to drive in Kavourias and make it 2-0.

The RailCats scored in the fifth when Jose Yepez double to deep left-center with two out and scored on Jay Pecci's hit to right to pull Gary to within a run.

In the eighth, Gary tied the game. Jose Yepez was hit by a pitch and went to second on Pecci's infield single. Alex Taylor came on to run for Yepez. After Curt Lee flied to left, Anthony Iapoce hit a bouncer to third that was fielded by Drobiak, who threw wildly to second base, allowing Taylor to score to make it 2-2. On the same play, Pecci was caught between second and third and tagged out for the second out of the inning. Iapoce was caught stealing to retire the side as the game remained tied and set the stage for Loggins' heroics in the bottom of the inning.

Bruso pitched well as the RailCats starter, going five innings, allowing four hits and two runs with no walks and five strikeouts. He retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced. Nathan Stone allowed three hits and a run in one-third of an inning to suffer the loss.

Pecci went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead a seven hit RailCats attack.

On Saturday, left-hander Jamie Bennett will get the start for the RailCats in a 7:05 PM game at Joliet. Bennett was 10-5 for Springfield-Ozark in the Frontier League in 2004.
