Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
After a wild series of events, Lynchburg would walk off Kannapolis for the 6-5 victory on Saturday evening.
Jaison Chourio picked up the second walk-off hit of the series for Lynchburg as he delivered as two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback. Lynchburg scored four runs in the final two innings to walk away victorious.
Chourio would start things off as well with an RBI single in the first inning to score Tommy Hawke, giving Lynchburg the early lead. Kannapolis would strike twice in the third inning to go up 2-1. They would do the same in the fourth inning as Caden Connor would single home two more.
In the fifth, Ralphy Velazquez would plate a run on a ground out to second, cutting the deficit back to two. In the seventh, a sacrifice fly to center field by Matt Hogan would re-extend the Kannapolis lead to three.
In the eighth inning, one of the most confusing plays in Lynchburg history unfolded as with the bases loaded, Robert Lopez grounded into a force out at second base. The return throw to first would sail high, allowing two runs to score. In the confusion, Kannapolis accused Lynchburg of obstruction, to which the retired batter returned from the dugout with the ball still in play and attempted to score.
In the meantime, Lopez broke for second to catch Kannapolis asleep but was retired after an easy throw. Once the chaos had subsided, Lynchburg trailed by one.
Down by one in the ninth inning, Luis Durango would be retired after dancing too far off the bag at third. However, on the throw, Durango collided with the third baseman and was carted off the field.
Lynchburg still had two aboard as both swiped bags to move into scoring position with Chourio at the dish. In a full count, he delivered a game-winning base hit up the left-center field alley, sending the Hillcats home happy.
With the win, Lynchburg secured a split of the series with the final game scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Lynchburg-hillcats.com.
