Rainiers Fall to River Cats, 11-4

West Sacramento, CA - The Tacoma Rainiers failed to keep pace with Sacramento and fell the River Cats 11-4 in front of 8,369 fans at Raley Field on Saturday night.
Sacramento's offense got off to a quick start, beginning with a two-run home run hit by outfielder Jai Miller with two outs in the first inning. The River Cats extended their lead to 6-0 after scoring four runs in the third. Miller hit a two-run single and outfielder Matt Carson drove in two more with a fly ball double to right field.
Tacoma watched the River Cats notch five more runs from the fourth inning on, capped off by a two-run home run by third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff with two outs in the eighth.
The Rainiers made their first appearances onto the scoreboard in the sixth inning, beginning with back-to-back solo home runs from third baseman Alex Liddi and designated hitter Luis Jimenez. Catcher Jose Yepez rounded out the frame with single to right field that scored Michael Saunders.
Jimenez singled in the ninth inning to score Dustin Ackley from second base and collect Tacoma's fourth and final run on Saturday night.
The home run in the sixth was Liddi's 12th of the season and his second over his last two games. He has now hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games and is currently riding a team-high nine-game hit streak. First baseman Matt Mangini went 3-for-5 and has collected hits in each of his first six games since coming off the disabled list on June 4.
The Rainiers were stymied early by a strong performance from River Cats starter Yadel Marti (4-1). The right-hander held Tacoma scoreless on four hits through the game's first five innings. Marti ended the night allowing eight hits over 5.1 innings with three walks and four strikeouts to collect the win.
Tacoma starter Charlie Haeger (1-1) was dealt the loss for the Rainiers. The knuckleballer surrendered seven runs to Sacramento on seven hits over four innings of work, while walking two and fanning two.
The Rainiers (28-34) play their series finale against the River Cats at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, with right-hander Blake Beavan (3-2, 4.76) slated to get the start. The game will be broadcast live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and can be streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
