Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - A three-run home run by Las Vegas first baseman Brett Wallace capped off a four-run third inning in what proved to be the difference maker for the Rainiers in a 6-2 loss to the 51s at Cheney Stadium on Monday.

Las Vegas shortstop Jesus Merchan notched the first run in the inning when he scored off third baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir's sacrifice fly. Two batter's later Wallace belted his 10th home run of the season to give the 51s a 4-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Tacoma waited to strike until the seventh, when Chris Woodward's double drove in Brad Nelson from third, ending 16 consecutive scoreless innings for the Rainiers dating back to May 8.

The Rainiers attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth after watching Las Vegas notch two more runs in the top of the inning, but the effort ended at just one run. Tommy Everidge hit a sacrifice fly to score Ezequiel Carrera from third before Mike Carp's fly out to end the game.

Starter Garrett Olson was tagged with the loss for the Rainiers after giving up four runs, one earned, over a season-high eight innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

The win went to Las Vegas starter Brad Mills after the left-hander turned in six innings of scoreless work. Mills allowed just two hits with four walks and two punchouts.

The Rainiers now head east to begin an eight-game road trip, beginning with a stop at Nashville and ending with a four-game set at Memphis. Going to the mound for the Rainiers when they take the field against the Sounds tomorrow is left-hander Luke French versus Nashville right-hander Kameron Loe.
