Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Sean Kazmar drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning single to propel the Portland Beavers to a 4-3 victory over the Reno Aces at PGE Park on Monday afternoon.
Kazmar's single off of T.J. Beam (0-1) drove in Chris Stewart from third base for the win. Stewart, who led off the ninth inning with a walk, advanced to third base on a single by Luis Durango to set up the game-winning hit.
Ernesto Frieri (2-1) allowed a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, but still earned his second win of the season.
Kazmar finished the day with three hits and Chris Denorfia drove in two runs for the Beavers (13-18).
Chris Rahl hit his second home run of the season while Ryan Roberts and Yunesky Sanchez each had one RBI for the Aces (16-16).
Roberts put the Aces up 1-0 with a two-out single to right field in the first inning, scoring Doug Deeds from second base.
Sanchez drove in Gerardo Parra with a single in the third inning to put the Aces up 2-0.
With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Durango reached on a throwing error by shortstop Pedro Ciriaco. Following a Kazmar walk, Denorfia tripled to deep center field, scoring Durango and Kazmar. Denorfia later scored on an Eric Munson fielder's choice to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead.
Rahl hit pinch-hit solo home run off of Frieri in the ninth inning to even the game at 3-3. Later in the inning, the Aces had runners on second and third when an attempted suicide squeeze resulted in Sean Coughlin being caught in between third and home after a failed bunt attempt by Mark Hallberg. After starting the season with six consecutive saves, Frieri blew his first save of the season.
Will Inman posted the longest outing of the season for a Beavers starting pitcher, giving up four hits and two runs in seven innings.
Joshua Collmenter struck out five and gave up three runs (1 earned) in 5 2/3 innings of work for the Aces.
The Beavers begin a four-game series against Memphis at AutoZone Park on Tuesday at 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: After hitting a triple in Monday's game, Denorfia is now tied for second in the PCL with four triples ... Collmenter had not allowed a run in seven innings pitched on the road this season prior to Monday's game ... Durango stole his PCL-leading 14th base of the season... Kazmar collected his second game winning hit of the week.
