Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers enlisted the help of the long ball in a 9-3 win over Reno at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday, leading to a series split between the two teams.

Of the nine runs the Rainiers scored in the outing, eight came off home runs, with first baseman Mike Sweeney belting two two-run home runs and outfielder Mike Wilson hitting a grand slam.

Sweeney first went deep with Matt Mangini on first base and one out in the bottom of the second. He delivered his second with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and outfielder Wilson aboard.

Wilson's grand slam, the Rainiers second of the season, came after Greg Halman, Dustin Ackley and Rob Johnson each reached base in consecutive at-bats to lead off the bottom of the second inning.

Reno showed some power in the game as well, with outfielder Brandon Allen belting a solo home run to lead off fourth in the team's first trip on to the scoreboard. Carlos Corporan drove in designated hitter Ryan Roberts with a groundout to first in the sixth to notch the Aces final run of the day.

Tacoma starter Blake Beavan picked up his first win in his first start at the Triple-A level. Beavan held Reno to two runs on seven hits over six innings of work, with one walk and two strikeouts.

The loss went to pitcher Jason Collmenter after the right-hander surrendered eight runs on 11 hits with four walks and two strikeouts in a 5.2-inning effort.

The Rainiers now embark on an eight-game road trip that starts with a four-game stop at Iowa followed by a four-game set at Omaha. Tacoma sends right-hander Ian Snell (3-3, 5.80) to the mound in the series opener against the Cubs, with right-hander Hung-Wen Chen (1-1, 4.29) slated to start for Iowa.
