LH Michael Kirkman (10-3, 3.07) vs. LH J.R. Mathes (8-7, 5.30)
TONIGHT: The RedHawks seek to avoid a sweep in the series finale against the Iowa Cubs. OKC has been involved in sweeps the previous 2 series, going 4-0 against Round Rock to begin this homestand after being swept at Memphis in a 4-game set. Iowa took last night's game 5-3 to gain a 3-0 series and 10-5 season series lead. The I-Cubs have won 6 of the last 7 head-to-head meetings with the RedHawks. OKC still leads the American South Division by 2 games over Albuquerque, 4 games over New Orleans and 14 over Round Rock. Iowa is atop the American North by 2.5 games over Memphis. Lefty Michael Kirkman gets the start for OKC. Kirkman has turned in 4 straight quality starts, earning the win in 3 of those games.
PICKING RIGHT UP: Chris Davis has gone 2-for-6 with 3 RBIs, 3 walks and 4 runs in his first 2 games since being optioned. Davis brings a 10-game hitting streak into tonight's contest, during which he's 19-for-42 (.452) with 2 homers and 14 RBIs.
GERMAN ADVANCES HITTING STREAK: Esteban German owns a 12-game hitting streak dating to July 9, prior to a stint on the DL. German has hits in all 7 games since returning from the DL on Tuesday. During the 12-game streak, German is 19-for-48 (.396) with 10 RBIs.
BOGGS ON BASE: Brandon Boggs raised his on-base streak to 32 games last night. The current streak began June 21 and is the longest active on-base streak in the PCL. Alex Gordon, formerly of Omaha, has the PCL's longest on-base streak of the season at 39 games from May 9-June 19. Boggs has reached base by hit or walk in each of his last 55 starts beginning May 24, the only break in the streak a strikeout as a pinch hitter June 19. Boggs is third in the league in walks with 68 and tied for fifth with teammate Chris Davis in on-base percentage at .407.
BROWN'S STREAK ENDS: Matt Brown saw his 16-game hitting streak end last night by going 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts. Brown's streak matched the best by a RedHawk this year. Jarrod Saltalamacchia also had a 16-game streak from April 21-May 11.
MR. HOLLAND'S STATUS: Derek Holland was activated from his major league rehab assignment and optioned to OKC effective Sunday. Holland made one start on rehab, a victory July 28 against Round Rock, and returned to the mound last night on the optional assignment, absorbing the loss (4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 HR).
HOW ABOUT A MULLIGAN? By starting August 0-2, OKC has lost the first 2 games of 4 straight months starting with May. The only month the RedHawks did not start 0-2 was April, when they dropped the opener, but won Game 2.
ERA NO. 1: The RedHawks lead the PCL in team ERA at 3.81. The ERA was 3.70 prior to Saturday's series opener. Tacoma is second at 3.99. The RedHawks have allowed the fewest home runs (72) in the PCL, but have surrendered 20 in 15 games against Iowa.
IOWA TOUGH ON PITCHERS: The RedHawks have a 3.49 ERA against all opponents other than the Iowa Cubs, working 836 innings while allowing 324 non-Iowa earned runs. Against Iowa, OKC has pitched 127 innings while giving up 79 earned runs, a 5.60 ERA. An individual RedHawks pitcher has allowed a 2-homer game 11 times this season and each of the last 7 has been against the I-Cubs, including one in each game this series against starters Michael Ballard, Guillermo Moscoso and Derek Holland. An OKC pitcher has yet to allow 3 homers in an outing.
FINAL OUT ELUSIVE: Since the All-Star break, RedHawks pitching has allowed 104 runs, 52 with 2 outs in an inning. For the season, 182 of OKC's 472 runs allowed (38.6 %) have been with 2 outs.
ALUMNI REPORT: Jarrod Saltalamacchia made his Pawtucket debut last night, catching, batting third and going 0-for-4 with a walk and a run in a 12-0 home win over the Durham Bulls.
