In a rain shortened game the Calgary Vipers belted four home runs and 16 hits to defeat the Victoria Seals 13-3 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The game was called off due to unplayable field conditions in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs, Rob Recuenco at second base, and Yuki Matsumoto at the plate. With the win the Vipers are now 4-1 and remain in first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Carlos Duncan had a huge night at the plate going two-for-two with a home run, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Fehlandt Lentini also had a big night going two-for-four with a big fly, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Drew Miller went two-for-three with a long ball, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Nelson Castro hit the other home run for the Vipers.
Erik Dessau (1-0) picked up the complete game victory going all five innings and giving up three runs while striking out three. Roberto Sotolongo (0-1) received the loss and also had to leave the game in the first inning after injuring his left ankle while throwing a pitch to the plate.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Lentini doubled, Castro singled, and Duncan hit a sacrifice fly. For Lentini it was his fourth game in a row with a double and fifth in total. After Castro stole second base, Rick Guarno doubled him home to double the lead to 2-0.
The Vipers added to their lead in the bottom of the third with a solo home run from Castro, single by Jorge Mejia, and a two run long ball from Duncan. More runs were plated when Miller singled, Mark Okano doubled, Ivan Reyes grounded out for a run batted in, and Colin Moro cashed a run for a 7-0 lead.
Three more tallies were added in the bottom of the fourth as Mejia and Duncan singled and Miller hit his league high third home run for a 10-0 advantage.
Victoria got into the scoring in the top of the fifth inning as Chris Van Rossum walked, Jamar Hill was hit by pitch, and Sergio Pedroza smacked a three run dinger for a 10-3 final score.
In the bottom of the inning Reyes and Moro singled before Lentini hit a three-run shot which gives him three and ties him with Miller for the league league. Recuenco also collected his first hit, a double, before the game was called.
This series continues tomorrow, Tuesday May 26th at 7:05 PM MDT as Joe Sergent (1-0) will make his second start of the season after not giving up a run in six innings in his first outing.
Finally on Wednesday May 27th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers seven game home stands closes with Evan Greusel (0-1) back on the mound looking to pick up his first win after retiring ten of the final 12 batters he faced to close out his first start. Right hander Josh Karp (0-0) will make his second start of the year as well after going four innings and giving up five earned runs and nine hits for a no decision in his first outing.
