Springfield Cardinals News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The seventh inning rolled around, storms rolled in and when all was said and done, the Cardinals and Travelers ended early.
A one hour and 45-minute rain delay that started in the top of the seventh ended up being baseball's executioner Thursday as the Travelers topped the Cardinals 5-1 in a game called official with a runner on and no one out in the top of the seventh.
Arkansas was essentially spotted two runs to start the game when Braden Bishop knocked a leadoff single immediately followed by a Beau Amaral home run for a 2-0 lead before an out was recorded.
Singles by Evan Mendoza and Andrew Knizner to leadoff the second put the Cardinals in position to get a run back. Two batters later, Chris Chinea delivered with a single into left that cut things to 2-1.
The Travelers extended their lead to 4-1 with run-scoring doubles from Amaral and Chuck Taylor in the fifth, and then to the 5-1 final on a Bishop single in the sixth that scored Joseph Odom.
1ST-HALF PLAYOFF RACE
The Travelers win pulled them back even with Northwest Arkansas atop the Texas League North after the Naturals fell 5-2 to the Drillers in Tulsa on Thursday.
Springfield remains in the same position it was in when the day started as the Cardinals remain one game out of first, now behind the Naturals and Travelers.
Tulsa is two games behind Arkansas and Northwest Arkansas and a game behind Springfield.
Four games remain in the 1st Half for all teams with two for Springfield coming against Arkansas and two against Tulsa.
