Sanford Mainers News Release
LYNN, Mass. - On a day that reached upwards of 100 degrees Fahrenheit around the New England region, the Sanford Mainers took to Fraser Field with a four-game winning streak. By the end of Thursday night, it was the cold rain that spoiled the winning streak as the North Shore Navigators were victorious in 3-2 fashion.
After a scoreless first inning, the Mainers picked up right where they had left off following their 8-0 win over Valley on Tuesday night. C.J. Willis (Quinnipiac) reached on an error to open the second frame before Colin Barczi (Vanderbilt) came to the plate with no outs in the inning.
Barczi launched a 1-2 pitch from Will Jones (Northeastern) over the left-field fence for a two-run home run. Barczi's second hit of the summer went 382 feet after leaving the bat at 103 miles per hour.
That home run stood until the bottom of the fourth inning when North Shore got on the board in large part due to three consecutive singles to start the inning.
The third of those singles was hit by Brady Dever (Brown) and scored Jesse Jaconski (Penn State) as the Navigators chipped away. After Ryan Douglas (Stonehill) struck out Luke Orfi (Georgia Highlands), Ryan Wideman (Western Kentucky) walked to load the bases.
Tommy Ellisen (UConn) came out of the bullpen for his first appearance of the summer as Douglas' day ended after 3.1 innings with all three runners on base being his responsibility.
The right-handed pitcher walked Brendan Jones (Holy Cross) to put the tying run across the scoreboard. One batter later, Danny MacDougall (Endicott) hit into a fielder's choice that scored Dever as the third and final run to come across the plate in the inning for North Shore.
Sanford and North Shore both went down in 1-2-3 fashion in the fifth inning, but the Mainers bats got going in the top of the sixth as they matched the Navigators' three-spot from two innings prior.
Devan Bade (Binghamton) brought home Devan Kodali (Vanderbilt) to tie that game at three. Willis grounded out to shortstop but brought Jared Davis (Virginia Tech) home in the process to take the lead.
Matt Miceli (Stony Brook) finished the scoring as he brought home Bade with a run-scoring single to put Sanford ahead by two runs.
The Mainers never had the chance to defend their 5-3 lead as the umpires put the game into a delay due to lightning.
As the lightning turned to downpour, Sanford's win streak came to an end as the game reverted to the score at the end of the fifth inning, 3-2 in North Shore's favor.
Sanford returns to action tomorrow against Ocean State back at Goodall Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
