Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
FATAL FINALE: Father's Day against the IronPigs proved frustrating for the RailRiders. It started well with a three-spot in the first and three perfect innings from Ivan Nova. But a Nova fielding error began the fourth and the tough times began as the IronPigs rallied for an 11-inning walk-off win, 5-4. Cody Overbeck delivered the winning contact with a sac fly.
MY BAD: The IL's top defense made a season-worst-tying three miscues on the game for two unearned runs on Nova's line.
SUPERNOVA: Nova pitched into the seventh for the first time this year only to see prospect third baseman Cody Asche belt a game-tying homer that frame. Since only one of the three runs against him was earned, he lowered his ERA to 2.04. In 17.2 innings, he has struck out 17 and walked just four.
MILLER TIME: Reliever Jim Miller inherited a first-and-third no-out jam in the eighth, but allowed just one run on a Darin Ruf sac fly. Miller tossed three scoreless innings of one-hit ball that allowed Cody Grice's ninth-inning triple and Zoilo Almonte's run-scoring single to tie it up and force extras. Miller struck out five and walked none. The right-hander has dominated left-handed hitters this year, holding southpaw stickers to a .164 average (10-for-61) with 35 strikeouts. He ranks third among IL relievers in K/9 IP (13.4).
PIGS FLY?: In the 11th, the IronPigs loaded the bases without a hit against Dellin Betances. Walks to Cameron Rupp and Darin Ruf were followed by a two-strike beaning of Asche before Overbeck's game-winning sacrifice fly.
RISPY BUSINESS: The RailRiders endured a 3-for-15 (.200) showing with men in prime real estate yesterday as they left 13 men on base. The number could have been even higher as SWB hit into three double plays on the day. In their three losses on the four-game set, the RailRiders went 4-for-28 (.143) with runners in scoring position.
HEY, I KNOW YOU!: The Red Wings boast a recent RailRiders alumnus on their roster in reliever Cody Eppley. He made his first appearance as a Red Wing two days ago against Gwinnett and allowed one run over two innings of work.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders fell to 7-12 in one-run games for the IL's worst winning percentage in such affairs (.368)...They are also 1-4 in extra-inning games, tying them with Louisville for the worst winning percentage in those affairs as well (.250)...SWB lost a game in which it held a lead for the 19th time...That means Dave Miley's squad has owned an advantage in 51% of its losses...Sunday's game was the outright longest of the season for the RailRiders in terms of time (3:39) and tied for the longest in innings with the May 9 2-1 loss to Indianapolis.
UNDER THE SEA: SWB is seven games under .500 for the third time this season. Before 2013, the franchise had not been seven games below sea level since it was 68-75 on the penultimate day of the 2005 season. It was last eight below .500 on Aug. 30, 2005 after an 8-2 loss at Syracuse dropped it to 65-73.
JUMP FOR ZOI: Zoilo Almonte doubled on a 3-for-6 day with his team-leading 36th RBI. His team-leading 20th multi-game of the year has his batting average at .292, the best it has been since May 7. Almonte went 8-for-14 (.571) over the last three games of the Lehigh Valley series and owns a team-best .339 June average.
ROSTER MOVES: Today the New York Yankees announced a number of roster moves for SWB. Right-hander Sam Demel hit the disabled list along with outfielders Melky Mesa and Ronnier Mustelier. Today's starter, Caleb Cotham, rejoined the team from Double-A Trenton and veteran infielder/DH Randy Ruiz signed with the Yankees and was assigned to SWB.
