Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - Two games brought two very different results for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) during Monday's doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins). Rochester bested the RailRiders in game one by a 10-1 margin. Game two proved to be a much different story as SWB took the 5-3 win.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense struck early in game two with three runs in the second. Dan Johnson led off with a single, and moved to second when Randy Ruiz knocked a base hit. Ruiz was signed from the Mexican League and assigned to SWB prior to Monday's game. Two outs later, Bobby Wilson hit a towering home run to the back of the bullpen in left field. It was his fourth homer of the year, and gave the RailRiders the 3-0 advantage.
After Chris Herrmann doubled home a run to make it 3-1 in the top of the fourth, the RailRiders added two more in the fifth. Walter Ibarra led off with a walk, and came around to score when Addison Maruszak followed with a double to right-center field. Maruszak scored later in the inning on a passed ball by catcher Drew Butera.
Rochester would score two runs in the seventh, both on a triple by Antoan Richardson. With the tying run at the plate, Matt Daley got Herrmann to fly to center field to end game two.
Graham Stoneburner took the mound for the RailRiders in game two, and provided four solid innings. He allowed just one run on two hits, and struck out two batters. Chase Whitley (2-0) posted scoreless fifth and sixth frames to earn his second win this season.
Virgil Vasquez (2-6) picked up the loss after he allowed three runs over four innings of work.
Game one was much different for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Rochester got all the offense they would need in the second inning. Eric Farris led off with a double, and after Doug Bernier and Eric Fryer reached to load the bases, Richardson singled to drive home Farris. Herrmann added a sacrifice fly to drive home Bernier, and the Red Wings led 2-0 after two innings.
The lone SWB run of game one came in the fourth inning. Johnson singled, moved to third on a double by Ruiz, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Bell.
Rochester put the game out of reach in the fifth when they added to their 6-0 lead. Richardson doubled, and then scored on a triple by Herrmann. Chris Colabello singled home Herrmann, and made gave the Red Wings an 8-1 advantage. They would add two more on their way to a 10-1 win.
Vance Worley (2-3) went the full seven frames, and allowed just one run and scattered nine hits.
Caleb Cotham (2-4) pitched the first two and one-third innings for SWB and took the loss.
SWB and Rochester will play the final portion of their series at PNC Field on Tuesday night, before they travel up to Rochester on Wednesday. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7:05 p.m., and Brett Marshall (2-5, 7.07) will be on the hill for the RailRiders. Andrew Albers (5-2, 3.01) will oppose him for the Red Wings. It's also a two for one Tuesday, meaning buy one get one free NEPA Honda Homer Zone tickets.
