Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (April 17, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fall to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 8-7 in 10 innings on Friday night. The Chiefs rallied from four runs down to force extra innings on a Kila Ka'aihue three-run home run in the eighth. Slade Heathcott drove in the game-winning run in the top of the tenth on a sacrifice fly to center.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (3-6) came out swinging tonight after falling 10-2 to Syracuse in the Chiefs' home opener yesterday. RailRiders center fielder Heathcott led off the game with a home run to right field off of Scott McGregor in the first at-bat of the evening.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sent eight batters to the plate in the second inning against McGregor. The first three runners reached base in the frame, which allowed shortstop Nick Noonan to drive in a run on a sacrifice fly to center field. With runners on second and third, Heathcott got his second RBI on the day with a single to right field. Left fielder Ramon Flores then capped off the three-run inning with an RBI double to increase the RailRiders' lead to four.
Syracuse (4-5) clawed its way back into the game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Down by four in the third, the Chiefs would score in three of the next four frames to cut the deficit to one at the end of the seventh. In the bottom half of the seventh, Syracuse brought themselves back within a run. Right fielder Tony Gwynn, Jr., walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Butler, his second RBI on the night.
Manny Delcarmen would replace Mitch Lively in the top of the eighth, but gave up two runs to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Jonathan Galvez and Austin Romine led off the inning with consecutive singles, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center from Noonan and an RBI single by Flores, respectively. The RailRiders led 7-4 going into the bottom of the eighth.
The Chiefs' bats finally came alive to the tune of three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Burriss led off the charge with a double and quickly advanced on an error by Figueroa at third when Minicozzi was at the plate. With two men on and with one swing of the bat, Kila Ka'aihue tied the game at seven with a long ball over the right-field wall.
After neither team scored in the ninth, Galvez led off the top of the 10th with a single off of Matt Grace. Romine singled, pushing Galvez to second, and a sacrifice bunt from Noonan allowed Galvez to advance to third. Galvez would come around as the winning run when Heathcott hit a sacrifice fly to den Dekker in deep center.
Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre play the third of a four-game series Saturday afternoon at 1:05 . Chiefs right-hander Bruce Billings is scheduled to start against RailRiders right-hander Kyle Davies.
