North Carolina FC News Release
CARY, NC (May 8, 2015) - The Carolina RailHawks announced today that Goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre will join MLS' Philadelphia Union on loan ahead of their weekend matchup against Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.
"We have evaluated all of our options and feel that Brian gives us the best opportunity to get a result in Vancouver," Philadelphia Union Technical Director Chris Albright said. "We have confidence in the familiarity he has with both our players and staff."
The RailHawks signed Sylvestre ahead of the 2015 season. The American shot stopper is a former player of the USL's Harrisburg City Islanders, where he made three senior level appearances. Sylvestre debuted for the Islanders in a U.S. Open Cup match against the Philadelphia Union and is a former member of both the United States U-17 and U-20 National Teams.
"We are very excited for Brian. This is a great opportunity for him and feel confident it will help him gain more experience," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "This is also a great opportunity for the RailHawks to start building a relationship with Philadelphia Union. We are a club that takes pride in helping young players develop."
At the same time, the RailHawks announced the signing of former Rider University Goalkeeper Matt Perrella to a short-term contract.
Perrella, 23, is from New Brunswick, New Jersey, and is a former member of the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic team. In 2014, he was the starting goalkeeper for Durham University (Durham, England) of the British Universities Championship Series Premier Conference. Perrella started all contests for the squad, helping Durham University finish in its best standing in school history while losing in the quarterfinals of the British Universities Championship Tournament and concluding the season with a final ranking of 6th overall.
Perrella trained with Newcastle United of the English Premiere League last year and had a trial with recent Champions League side, APOEL Nicosia, as well as Sporting Kansas City from the MLS.
The RailHawks will travel to San Antonio for the sixth game of the Spring Season on Saturday, May 9th, to face off with the Scorpions. The match will be broadcast live on WRAL2.
The Carolina RailHawks will continue the 2015 Spring Season with the addition of Perrella and will play their next home match against New York Cosmos on Saturday, May 16th at 7:30pm. The full RailHawks home schedule can be viewed here.
