Key Clashes in New York, Minnesota, and Jacksonville Headline Week 6 Schedule
May 8, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL) News Release
NEW YORK (May 8, 2015) - The North American Soccer League (NASL) Spring Season passes its halfway point this weekend with matchups in Ottawa, Jacksonville, Minnesota, San Antonio, and New York.
Week 6 kicks off on Saturday afternoon when the new-look Tampa Bay Rowdies travel to Canada's capital city to take on Ottawa Fury FC at TD Place. Later that evening, a pair of unbeaten teams, the Atlanta Silverbacks and Indy Eleven, visit Minnesota United FC and Jacksonville Armada FC respectively. Rounding out the evening will be a matchup between the San Antonio Scorpions and Carolina RailHawks at Toyota Field.
The league-leading New York Cosmos host the league's lone match on Sunday, welcoming a confident FC Edmonton side to Shuart Stadium.
Here is a look at all five Week 6 matchups:
Ottawa Fury FC vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies
3 p.m. ET | Saturday, May 9
TD Place | Ottawa, Ontario
Watch | ESPN3 (National - U.S.), OttawaFuryFC.com (National - U.S./Canada), Rogers TV (Local - Ottawa)
Combining league play and Amway Canadian Championship action, Fury FC has dropped its last four matches, and with the second-place Rowdies coming to town, getting back on track isn't going to be easy. Tampa Bay is unbeaten on the road so far this season, and their high-powered attack will be facing a Fury FC back line that has conceded 10 goals in its last four matches. The Rowdies will be without forward Georgi Hristov, who is serving a one-game suspension.
Jacksonville Armada FC vs. Indy Eleven
7:30 p.m. ET | Saturday, May 9
Community First Park | Jacksonville, Fla.
Watch | ESPN3 (National - U.S.), CW17 (Local - Jacksonville)
Armada FC has been perfect at home this year, taking six points from their first two matches in front of the Jacksonville faithful. On Saturday, they will host an unbeaten Indy Eleven side that is well rested following an off week. Juergen Sommer's men have relied on strong defensive performances and timely goals to get results in 2015, and it seems to be working, as they have already surpassed their point total from all of last year's Spring Season. Armada FC enters the match on the heels of a dramatic 2-1 win over visiting San Antonio last weekend, and they will be looking to carry that momentum into Saturday's clash with Indy.
Minnesota United FC vs. Atlanta Silverbacks
8 p.m. ET | Saturday, May 9
NSC Stadium | Blaine, Minn.
Watch | ESPN3 (National - U.S.), KSTC45-TV (Local - Minneapolis-St. Paul)
The Loons have only scored two goals from open play this season, and on Saturday, they will face one of the league's best defensive teams, the Silverbacks. If Christian Ramirez, Pablo Campos, and Miguel Ibarra are to return to their normal goal-scoring form, they will have to do so against an Atlanta team that hasn't conceded a goal in over 188 minutes. With that said, Gary Smith's side has had a tough time scoring this season. The Silverbacks only have four goals to their name in five matches, which is a stark contrast from some of the Loons' other early-season opponents like the Tampa Bay Rowdies and FC Edmonton.
San Antonio Scorpions vs. Carolina RailHawks
8:30 p.m. ET | Saturday, May 9
Toyota Field | San Antonio, Texas
Watch | ESPN3 (National - U.S.), WRAL2 (Local - Raleigh-Durham)
After an unexpectedly slow start to the season, the Scorpions return home to face a RailHawks team that they have had good luck against at Toyota Field in the past. Carolina has only left San Antonio with a victory on one occasion. The Scorpions will hope that the trend continues, as they have yet to pick up a victory this season. Alen Marcina's side has just one point through four matches, and two of their losses have come at home. Saturday's match in the Alamo City will feature the league's top two scorers, Carolina's Nacho Novo and San Antonio's Omar Cummings, who have each tallied a league-high three goals.
New York Cosmos vs. FC Edmonton
2 p.m. ET | Sunday, May 10
Shuart Stadium | Hempstead, N.Y.
Watch | ONE World Sports (National - U.S.), TSN GO (National - Canada), City TV (Local - Edmonton)
Sunday's match between the Cosmos and Eddies could easily be considered the marquee clash of Week 6. On one side, the league-leading Cosmos are brimming with confidence, having only conceded one goal all season long. Lining up on the other side is an FC Edmonton team that has found the net 11 times in their last four matches. A matchup to watch will be on the left side of the field, where Eddies star Lance Laing will go up against one of the Cosmos' promising young defenders, Hunter Gorskie.
