North Carolina FC News Release
BLAINE, MN (September 15, 2010) - The Carolina RailHawks (10-9-8, 38 pts) fell to the NSC Minnesota Stars (9-12-7, 34 pts) 1-0 on a rainy Wednesday night. Devon McKenney and Amir Lowery were both ejected from the game after receiving red cards.
A thunderstorm delayed the start of the game by an hour and a half, and by kick off large puddles of rain consumed midfield. The game didn't get any easier for the RailHawks in the 19th minute when Devon McKenney was given a red card for tangling up in the box with a Minnesota forward. Stars' forward Simone Bracalello was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, when he sent the penalty kick soaring over the crossbar.
Devin Del Do broke the scoreless tie in the 37th minute when he directed in a Lucas Rodriguez cross. The scoring sequence began with the RailHawks clearing a Stars corner kick, but Rodriguez regained possesion and sent in a low cross that Del Do was able to connect on. Matt Watson and the RailHawks' attack responded with a few late opportunities but were unable to find the equalizer, going into halftime down 1-0.
The rain reduced to a drizzle in the second half, but the RailHawks were still unable to find success in the attacking third. For the last 10 minutes of the game, the RailHawks were forced to carry on with nine men when Amir Lowery was shown red in the 80th minute. After losing possesion, Lowery slid in for a hard tackle near the sideline. The second ejection of the game made it difficult for the RailHawks to mount a last minute comeback, dropping the game 1-0.
Next, the RailHawks play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday at Crystal Palace Baltimore. Carolina returns home to WakeMed Soccer Park on September 25 to face the Puerto Rico Islanders, and close out the regular season at home on October 1 against the Austin Aztex.
