BALTIMORE, MD (September 18, 2010) - The playoff bound Carolina RailHawks (11-8-8, 41 pts) cruised past Crystal Palace Baltimore (6-16-6, 24 pts) 4-2 on Saturday night. Gregory Richardson, Marques Davidson, Kupono Low and Tom Heinemann all scored in the RailHawks' biggest offensive performance of the season.
"I thought we started the game really well and we scored three goals early" said RailHawks head coach Martin Rennie. "Unfortunately we didn't start the second half as well as we did the first, but we ended up with a good 4-2 win and that gets us into the playoffs, and gives us seven wins on the road this season, and that is a really good record."
The RailHawks jumped out to their quickest start of the season, scoring three goals within the first 14 minutes of the game. Richardson kicked off the scoring in the 9th minute when he intercepted a pass from former NC State player Alan Sanchez and blasted it past goalkeeper Mark Murphy. One minute later, Floyd Franks set up Davidson who beat Murphy to go up 2-0.
Despite the early advantage, the RailHawks refused to relent. In the 14th minute, Kupono Low slotted home a penalty kick after Murphy was called for a penalty just inside the box. With only minutes remaining in the first half, the RailHawks were inches away from going up 4-0 after Daniel Paladini hit the crossbar with a bending kick.
In the second half, Crystal Palace began to climb back in the game when Shaun Pejic found the back of the net in the 50th minute. Baltimore cut the lead to 3-2 in the 60th minute after Neto dropped a pass on the right side to Alan Sanchez who cut inside and blasted it past Nic Platter.
The RailHawks abruptly ended the Baltimore comeback attempt in the 65th minute thanks to the right foot of Tom Heinemann. The sequence began with a Paladini corner kick that bounced around in the box for a bit. Heinemann found possesion and vollied it past Murphy to ensure a 4-2 victory for the RailHawks.
Next, the RailHawks return home for the two last games of the season. First the RailHawks square off with the Puerto Rico Islanders next Saturday, Sep. 25 at 7:00 p.m. Then, the RailHawks take on the Austin Aztex on Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. For tickets and information please visit the LGFCU Box Office at WakeMed Soccer Park, call 919-859-5425 or visit www.carolinarailhawks.com.
