Crystal Palace Baltimore News Release
Baltimore, MD - Crystal Palace Baltimore ended their five-game scoring drought, but were on the wrong side of a 4-2 scoreline against the Carolina RailHawks at Paul Angelo Russo Stadium on Saturday evening. Carolina scored three goals in a fifteen-minute span, and led 3-0 at halftime. Baltimore cut the deficit to one in the second half with goals from Shaun Pejic and Santiago Fusilier, but Carolina hit the dagger with 24 minutes to play.
The visitors capitalized on a Baltimore turnover just nine minutes into the contest. A backpass from Alan Sanchez found its way into a crowd of three RailHawk attackers. Ultimately, Greg Richardson found the ball and slotted it home past Baltimore netminder Mark Murphy for a 1-0 lead. One minute later, Carolina doubled their lead, as Floyd Franks found Marques Davidson, who put the visitors up 2-0. Only a quarter of an hour had elapsed when the RailHawks increased their advantage to three. A penalty was awarded to Carolina, even though it was difficult to tell if a foul even occurred inside the box. Nonetheless, Kupono Low struck from the spot to give the RailHawks a 3-0 lead.
Daniel Paladini nearly scored a fourth for the visitors as the first half drew to a close. His free kick from 25 yards was well held by Murphy, who made his first start between the sticks for Baltimore. Moments later, another strike from Paladini rattled off the crossbar.
Although they were in a deep 3-0 hole after 45 minutes, the home side looked rejuvenated as the second half commenced. Baltimore finally erased their scoring drought in the 50th minute, as Dan Lader sent a high, looping ball to Shaun Pejic. The Englishman was true from close range, and Baltimore cut the deficit to 3-1. With the goal, Baltimore ended 541 consecutive minutes of scoreless play, a streak which stretched back to August 14th, in a game against Carolina.
One minute before the hour mark, Baltimore struck again, as Neto delivered a beautifully weighted pass to Alan Sanchez, who was in the clear on the right flank. Sanchez's low strike gave the undermanned home side a great boost of confidence, trailing by a single goal with just over 30 minutes to play. However, in the 66th minute, Carolina put the result beyond doubt, as Tom Heinemann put home a rebound from a corner kick, giving the RailHawks their fourth goal of the evening.
With the victory, Carolina (11-9-8) remains at second place in the NASL Conference, while Baltimore falls to 6-16-6; the team has now lost six games in a row. Baltimore wraps up their 2010 home schedule against the Portland Timbers at Paul Angelo Russo Stadium on Saturday, September 25th.
