Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Schaumburg, Ill.-Justin Hendrickson went 4 for 4 including his league-leading 22nd home run to lead the Schaumburg Flyers to a 4-2 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Friday night. The loss snapped the RailCats winning streak at five, one short of the club record. Gary remained tied with Lincoln for first place in the Southern Division with a 12-8 record in the second half and an overall mark of 39-29.

Schaumburg scored three runs in the second inning off RailCats starting pitcher Mike Schaefer (1-7). Hendrickson singled and Chris Weekly walked. Eric Cole followed with a double to the fence in left to drive in both runners. Geoff McCallum added a two-out run-scoring single after a RailCats error kept the inning alive to make it 3-0.

Hendrickson drilled a one-out solo home run in the third to make it 4-0.

Gary started back in the fifth. Steve Haake singled to lead off the inning and Jay Pecci walked with one out. Curt Lee delivered a sacrifice bunt and reached safely on the play on an error to load the bases. Anthony Iapoce struck out for the second out of the inning before Eric McNamee walked to force in a run to make it 4-1, but Scott Samuels struck out to end the inning.

In the seventh, the RailCats again loaded the bases with one out on singles by Lee and Iapoce and a walk to McNamee. Samuels delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2, but Jason Colson struck out and the RailCats did not seriously threaten to score again.

After pounding out 26 hits and 19 runs over the previous two nights, the RailCats were limited to just five hits and stranded nine base runners in the loss.

Cody Fisher kept the club close, tossing four scoreless innings in relief of Schaefer. It was the longest stint by a RailCats reliever this season.

The RailCats play at Schaumburg again Saturday night at 6:20 PM. Willie Glen (5-1, 3.23) will start for Gary against Schaumburg's R.J. Swindle (5-3, 3.25).

Notes: Anthony Iapoce suffered a hand injury on a bunt attempt in the ninth inning and left the game in the middle of his at bat. No report on his condition was available...RailCats first baseman Ben Risinger reported improvement in his sprained left wrist but could be placed on the seven day disabled list. Matt Einspahr is currently on the disabled list and would be eligible to be activated.
