Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL - The Schaumburg Flyers beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-2 in the opener of a four-game series on Friday night at Alexian Field. The Flyers improve to 11-10 in the second half and 27-42 overall. The RailCats drop to 12-8 and 39-29. Both teams are in the hunt for first place in the South Division along with Lincoln. The Saltdogs lost at St. Paul on Friday, so the Flyers are now 1.5 games behind co-leaders Lincoln and Gary.

Schaumburg starter Raymond Jenkins had a 4-1 lead heading to the seventh inning. He ran into trouble with one out, loading the bases on two singles and a walk. Dan Jackson came on in relief after signing with the Flyers before the game. Scott Samuels hit a sacrifice fly to center field, but Jackson then struck out Jason Colson to hold Gary to one run. Jenkins (4-5) picked up his fourth win and had a season-high eight strikeouts.

The Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the second inning against RailCats starter Mike Schaefer. Eric Cole drove in two runs with a double to left field. Geoff McCallum added an RBI single later in the inning. Oscar Materano reached on an error by Jay Pecci to keep the inning alive for McCallum, making the third run unearned.

Justin Hendrickson hit his 22nd home run of the year in the third inning against Schaefer (1-7). Gary leftfielder David Weiner leaped at the wall, but could not haul in the fly ball. The solo shot moved Hendrickson within one of tying former Flyer Mario Delgado for the franchise single-season home run record. Hendrickson went 4-for-4 in the game with two runs scored. It was his first four-hit game of the season.

Gary also loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Jenkins struck out Anthony Iapoce for the second out, but walked Eric McNamee to force in a run. Samuels then struck out to end the inning and leave the bases full. An error by Jenkins in the inning made the run unearned.

Cody Fisher did not allow a run in four innings of relief for Gary. He worked out of a jam in the seventh, holding the Flyers scoreless after the first two batters reached. Nate Cotton worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.

These two teams continue their series on Saturday night at Alexian Field. LHP R.J. Swindle (5-3) starts for the Flyers against RHP Willie Glen (5-1). First pitch is at 6:20 PM and fireworks will follow the conclusion of the game. Tickets are available by calling 847-891-2255 or visiting www.flyersbaseball.com.
