Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Darin Kinsolving's run-scoring single in the tenth inning completed an impressive Gary SouthShore RailCats comeback and gave the club a 5-4 win and a three-game sweep of the Lincoln Saltdogs Thursday night at Haymarket Park. With the win, the RailCats jumped into second place, one game behind St. Paul, with 16 games to play in the first half race.
With one out in the tenth, Tanner Townsend singled up the middle and moved to third on a hit-and-run single from Scott Samuels. That set the stage for Kinsolving, who ripped the first pitch he saw from Saltdogs reliever Jared Hoerman (1-1) to left for an RBI single. The run was the first allowed this season by Hoerman.
Travis Kerber (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, lowering his ERA to a microscopic 0.89.
The RailCats tied the game in the ninth, with Jason Colson reaching on an error by second baseman Jake Whitesides, and Jose Yepez reaching and pushing pinch-runner David Weiner to second on another Lincoln error. Pinch-hitter Eric McNamee bunted the runners to second and third with one out, and Jay Pecci delivered his club-record sixth sacrifice fly, scoring Weiner, to tie the game at four.
Lincoln starter Brian Rodaway was terrific through seven innings, allowing only two balls to leave the infield before the 8th inning on a pair of doubles from Anthony Iapoce. But in the eighth, Iapoce delivered again, notching a two-out single, and scoring when Townsend ripped his fifth home run off the left-field foul pole to bring the RailCats within a run.
The Saltdogs did all of their damage in the second inning against RailCats starter Jamie Bennett. After Albenis Machado doubled home Jake Whitesides and scored on a Cory Harris single, Kevin Sullivan homered to deep left, his fifth of the season, to make the score 4-0.
The RailCats plated an unearned run in the third, when Iapoce scored on a ground ball off Townsend's bat that was mishandled by Lincoln shortstop Albenis Machado.
Bennett went six innings, allowing only the four second-inning runs, on nine hits, with a walk and two strikeouts. Steve Plucinski allowed just one hit in two innings of work, in just his second appearance for the RailCats.
The win was the RailCats fifth straight, one shy of a club record.
The RailCats continue a six-game road trip Friday night in Kansas City, opening a three-game series with the T-Bones, who stand in third place in the South Division. Quintin Oldenburg (6-0) will take the mound for the RailCats opposing John McDonald. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WEFM, 95.9, and at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
