Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
FARGO, ND- Brennan Metzger provided the game-winning RBI on a 12th inning walk to give the Gary SouthShore RailCats (28-25) a split of the series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (27-26). The RailCats tallied a season-high 13 bases on balls and outlasted the RedHawks in the 7-3 win.
The series finale of a thrilling four-game affair was not meant to end on time. The contest was delayed for two hours due to rain before the first pitch came at 2:32 PM at Newman Outdoor Field. The series had been hotly contested, with each game decided by one run and one 12-inning game already in the books. This one went 13.
Jose Gonzalez evened the score at three runs apiece in the 6th inning with a two-run homer. It was Gonzalez's fourth long ball of the year and his second of the series. Following the blast, no team scored for over six innings.
EJ Devarie led off the 13th with a walk, advanced to second base on a sacrifice, and watched a RailCat strikeout. With two down, Anthony Checky reached on an error by Bryan Johns. Then, Alex Crosby walked to load the bases for Metzger. After working the count full, Metzger watched a low pitch to walk and send Devarie home. The RailCats broke the game open after the go-ahead run crossed. Checky scored on a wild pitch and two more runs scored on a Frank Martinez single.
Andy Roberts pitched a scoreless bottom of the 13th to seal the 7-3 win. Roberts went four innings of four-hit ball without surrendering a run. Santiago Rodriguez also had quality relief, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings. Karl Triana recorded a quality start by throwing 6.1 innings and giving up just three runs.
Frank Martinez was the only RailCat to register a multi-hit day, but five Cats walked multiple times. The four-run win broke a streak of five straight one-run games. In contrast to the season-high in walks, the RailCats struck out a season-high 19 times. The RedHawks had more than double the number of hits as the Cats, but were crippled by three errors. Fargo's only wins in the series came in walk-off fashion. The game lasted 4:34, a season-long for road games.
The RailCats continue their road trip by heading further north to Winnipeg. First pitch tomorrow is at 7:00 PM and coverage begins at 6:35 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
