Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts saw their streak of 10 straight series victories come to an end Thursday night, as the Joplin Blasters took the finale of the four-game set 3-2 to earn a split of this week's set at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
With the Blasters (16-36) trailing 2-1 entering the seventh, Mark Krueger launched his first professional homer for his third hit of the night to tie the score.
The visitors then grabbed the lead in the next inning against Chad Nading (0-1). Mitch Glasser doubled with one out in the frame, and scored the eventual game-winning run with two outs on a single by Edwin Gomez.
In relief of their starter Wander Perez, the Joplin bullpen kept Wichita (33-19) quiet in the middle and late innings, as the trio of Jose Ortega (3-2), Keith Picht, and Victor Capellan worked a combined four and one-third scoreless innings.
After Joplin grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth, Picht came on to throw a scoreless home half of the eighth. Capellan came on for the ninth and allowed a two-out single to Christian Stringer, his third knock of the night, but stranded him at second to earn his third save.
The Wingnuts struck first, plating a run in the second. With the bases loaded, Charlie Valerio made a throwing error that allowed Matt Chavez to score the game's first run.
Joplin evened the score in the fifth, but Richard Prigatano led off the home half of the frame with a solo home run, to put Wichita back up by one.
Eddie Medina worked his fourth quality start for the Wingnuts, allowing two runs on seven hits over seven innings, but earning a no-decision for his efforts.
The Wingnuts continue their homestand Friday night as they welcome the Sioux Falls Canaries to Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Right-hander Tim Brown (5-2, 5.07) will be on the mound for Wichita, while Sioux Falls has yet to announce Friday's starter. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
