Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Winnipeg, MT, CA June 22, 2015 - The Gary South Shore RailCats second trip to Canada in a month got off to a great start Monday night with a comeback win 9-7 over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park. The RailCats spotted Winnipeg a 6-2 lead early on as the "fish" took it to Gary starter Chris Cummins.

Cummins would not make it past the third inning as Josh Mazzola hit one of his two homers of the night in the bottom of the third to help chase the RailCats starter from the game. With the score 6-2 and no outs Winnipeg had runners at first and second. AJ Quintero came into the game for Cummins and was able to get a double play ball from the bat of Ramon Ortega and a strike out of Brady Wilson to keep the score at 6-2.

From there Quintero would work another two scoreless innings as the RailCats started to work on Goldeyes starter Matt Jackson. In the top of the sixth the RailCats tied the game sending up nine men to the plate. Adam Taylor would double with one out one of his four hits on the night to go with three RBI. After JD Pulfer lined to first for out number two Tillman Pugh singled to score Taylor and it was 6-3. Drew Martinez then worked a walk off of Jackson to bring in Raul Rivera for Winnipeg.

Jaime Del Valle doubled off the wall in right to bring home Pugh off of Rivera. Martinez also scored as the relay throw from second baseman Brad Boyer bounced to the backstop allowing Del Valle to go to third and it was 6-5. Roger Bernal would tie the game with an infield single to short scoring Del Valle. Mark Pope then came into the game for Winnipeg after Ryan Brockett singled and got Jon Jones to end the inning tied at six.

Chuck Fontana then worked a 1-2-3 sixth to take the teams to the seventh even at six. Zac Mitchell would double to right down the line to lead off the inning off of Pope. Adam Taylor then singled to bring in Mitchell for a 7-6 RailCats lead. Pulfer would move Taylor to third on a sac bunt and Pugh would hit a sac fly to right to make it 8-6. Brendan Lafferty would get the Goldeyes out of anymore damage in the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh Mazzola hit a solo shot off of Fontana to make it 8-7, but the RailCats got an insurance run in the ninth on another sac fly from Pulfer. Jesse Snodgrass worked 1.1 IP and Andy Loomis (8) notched a four out save for the South Shore. Fontana (2-1) was the winner, while Mark Pope (0-1) was charged with the loss.

The two teams will play game two of the series and game five of the six game swing for the RailCats Tuesday night at 7:05 pm at Shaw Park. The RailCats will look to RHP Charle Rosario (4-2, 6.32) to take the hill to face LHP Kyle Anderson (1-1, 4.43) for the Goldeyes. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.

The RailCats return home to US Steel Yard following a Thursday off day to take on the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday night at 7:10pm.
