Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
WICHITA, KS-The Sioux Falls Canaries hit the road on Monday night for a quick, two-game roadtrip against the defending American Association Champion, Wichita Wingnuts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Two teams combined for 24 runs on 29 hits, but it was the Wingnuts who scored four unanswered runs in the 6th and 7th innings to secure the 13-11 victory.
The Birds' found themselves down 5-0 after the first three innings, but erupted for eight runs on nine hits, in a 12 at-bat top of the 4th inning. Canaries shortstop Jerome Pena led off the inning with a single, the first of seven consecutive hits for the Birds. He scored the first run of the inning two batters later on a David Bergin RBI double, and would come around to bat again later in the inning, slicing an RBI triple down the 3rd base line to bring home outfielder Chris Grayson.
The Canaries added three more runs in the top of the 6th inning, and took an 11-9 lead into the bottom of the inning, but the bats went cold after that, collecting just one more hit the rest of the night.
The Wingnuts jumped all over Sioux Falls starting pitcher, Stephen Bougher, who allowed eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits over his four innings of work. Reliever Tyler Pearson suffered the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in his one inning of work.
Wichita's starter, Charlie Lowell also had a rough night, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits over his five innings.
Pena had a good night at the plate for the Canaries, going 2-for-4 with a triple, and RBI, and a run scored. Grayson put together his best day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
The Birds' will send RHP Jeremy Strawn (2-3, 4.07 ERA) to the mound for the second, and final game of the series on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
The Canaries have a scheduled off-day Wednesday, but return home on Thursday, June 25th to open up a four-game series against the North Division rivals, the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
