Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Winnipeg, Manitoba - Adam Klein, Mike Massaro and Cristian Guerrero each had a pair of hits as the RailCats (30-19) got three late runs to beat Winnipeg (24-24) 7-2 on Monday night.
The game played out remarkably similar to each of the first two games of the series with the Goldeyes and RailCats playing a tight game early before the RailCats added runs in the late innings.
With the victory, the RailCats took the series with their third win and will attempt to sweep Winnipeg tomorrow night. The RailCats will also have at least a .500 road trip after losing three of four in Sioux City.
To lead off the game Adam Klein pounded a ball into right-center for a double. Two batters later, Klein stood on third and scored on Ryan Babineau's sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0 RailCats after one.
In the bottom of the second, Fehlandt Lentini knocked his sixth home run of the season to tie the game at one.
Winnipeg starter Pete Gehle continued his early struggles in the third loading the bases on a four-pitch walk to Ryan Babineau. Christian Vitters followed with a base hit through the left-side score Adam Klein and Cristian Guerrero to take a 3-1 lead.
The RailCats finally knocked out Gehle in the fifth inning taking advantage of three walks in the inning including a bases-loaded walk by Zac Mitchell to end the starter's evening.
Gehle allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and six walks. He struck four and left the game trailing 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Winnipeg loaded the bases against Morgan Coombs. With Ray Sadler at the plate, Coombs was called for a balk allowing the Goldeyes to score their second run and make it 4-2. Morgan struck out Sadler to end the inning, an inning in which he set down all three hitters on strikes.
Coombs finished his night after five innings allowing two runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out three, all of them coming in the fifth inning.
With the score still at 4-2, each team's bullpen put up a zero in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
In the ninth, the RailCats offense awoke for three more runs against Goldeyes closer Patrick Keating. Ryan Babineau had an RBI single and Drew Martinez had a sacrifice fly to give the RailCats a 7-2 cushion for Ian Durham in the ninth inning.
The RailCats complete their series with Winnipeg Tuesday night at Shaw Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The radio broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore.
One lucky fan will have a chance to take three swings to take 3 swings to hit a home run and if that lucky fan does hit it out of the park with a home run they'll win $10,000 in the RailCats July JACK-pot. For more information on July JACK-pot, call 219 882-2255.
